I was having coffee this morning when I noticed a yote coming across a small ridge in behind our house, I through a coat on with some boots and I took a walk to the west side of the ridge, I finally saw the yote but he cut in behind some trees and took off so I couldn't get a shot.

I did grab a target so I could see how bad a shot I am, I was 35 to 40 yards away from the target and it seems I'm a better shot from the kneeling position. The gun is all cleaned and ready for a shot at the yote. 102_0815.JPG

Well if you see him again and you can get a shot I say he gonna be a dead yote .

I'm thinking the yote will be back this afternoon or tomorrow morning, either way I'll be out there.

Go prone if possible....much more stable than even kneeling.

Better yet, get or make a set of shooting sticks!

I did some sitting waiting to see if the coyote would show up around the trails the deer run, three hours and nothing showed up except the deer.

In picture 0283 you can see the spot I saw the coyote this morning for a second before he went behind the trees to the left and then up the hill. 102_0823.JPG

Good luck. I missed not one but 2 this deer season! They were both 70-80 yard shots on moving coyotes, but I still wish I got them.

the 270 is slight overkill in the thick brush but that's my typical deer setup.
you can pattern the coyotes just like deer - they just need some consistent feeding habits out of the brush;)

Good luck Woody- you'll get him. Should be easier once it snows.

I'd take this one step further as we rarely shoot the HP rifles for fun
if you have safe backdrops set plywood targets in the woods randomly within shooting range - the more you shoot at those targets offhand which is all a yote is going to provide the better you'll get

Really a .223/556 should take care of them, but I've been seeing some rather large ones hit on the road around here

I'll be up earlier to see if the coyote shows up again, if he doesn't then I'll put in more wood before the storm and then sit in a different spot in the late afternoon.

I did order a shooting tripod which should be here Monday.

    It's the only rifle I have so I don't have a choice.

Honestly it's unlikely to see them if you are moving a bunch - they are keener than deer in that regard(besides does)

I did see his tracks go to the brook, they didn't come back so I think he crossed there. That might put the den on the hill that runs the length of the brook.

Once we get more snow I'll see if it's coming up through what we call the bowl which leads up top. From there the coyote would come down a hill to our house.

I was out early for two hours, nothing except the deer hanging around.

Ya, they move around a lot. Hard to pattern for sure. Have you considered a yote call?

No problem with a .270 shooting yotes. The reach out just as well and are fairly flat shooting. Yes, one can kill with lesser calibers but then, dead is dead, no matter what it was shot with.
