Well it's 67 with a predicted low of 52 today. Even for us, that is pretty warm. We had some cooler days and nights below freezing last week. Didn't bother with a fire last night, won't bother tonight. Using a lot more kindling than I did last year or the year before and it does seem to help me get better cold starts. I'm finding top down starts are slower than bottom up but with way less smoke. I'm putting pine cones on top of pine kindling splits NS on top of slightly thicker elm kindling splits EW on top of pine. A bit of fat wood tucked in between a couple cones gets it all going easier than trying to directly light the pine cones. I use a lighter but with the fat wood, it is definitely a "one match" affair. The fat wood burns well enough that I can close the door right away so I haven't been having any problems with smoke spillage.

67 degrees is pretty darned warm for this time of the year! We were in the 50's but cooler now. 37 at present but no cold predicted until about a week from today. Not much of any snow predicted either. I'm hoping we can get through most of December without much snow so I can work on the wood without the hassle.

My wife liked the fat wood but when we got a cat stove I said no more. We do love the super cedars though.

Burned the week of Thanksgiving so far, now back to a cold stove. whatever happened to winter ?
Really depressed to see all the snow in northern Maine, but nothing more than a slushy layer once here...

I finally fired up the boiler last night. Our highs are in the low 40's F and lows in the 30's which is still warm enough for the heat pump, but I think I've just been itching to burn some wood since I used so little last winter! I have a half cord or so of pine to get through anyway, this is a good time to use it.
