Congratulations Trilifter7 on the little girl. This indeed is an exciting time in your life and it is very normal to be concerned about the baby's health. Yet you, like most, will soon learn that you probably worry too much and will find they don't break really that easy under normal circumstances. It's like the cartoons where new parents are so careful and handling the baby as it it were going to break when you touch it. After a couple babies, you see them carrying the new baby around holding onto just one arm and the baby dangling and not caring or hurting.

I grew up knowing no heat other than wood or coal heat. These were long before epa (we didn't have puppies for pets, we had dinosaurs). Our parents did not worry about dust or allergies. They didn't even worry about us kids getting burned on the stoves (we had 3 stoves). I've seen where many do worry about burns and kids running into stoves. But then I also think back to when I was young and remember we had lots of company that did not heat with wood or coal. They were not used to having a hot stove sitting in the room. Yet, I do not ever remember any company ever getting burned from one of the stoves. In fact, they loved the stoves!

Yes, smoke in some areas (like Denver and Seattle for instance) can be a problem if the weather is wrong. In the midwest, very rare to have a problem with it. No doubt it could be worse in large cities if many heated with wood but we are talking the exception rather than the rule and I personally refuse to live with the exceptions. I deal with them but won't let them rule me.

    Congratulations and good luck.

Yes as far as the hot stove goes they learn that one fast. Have it really hot and take them close as a toddler so it's so hot they can feel it and say "HOT NO TOUCH " their instincts and you keep them off of it. Now as a smaller infant they may crawl to it that's when you need to keep them away more.

As far as smoke , we have been eating it here as the whole state has been smoked out from the Appalachian fires for over a week.

The Amish actually have kids with great ammune systems since they live a more traditional and "dirty" lifestyle. There exposed to more and therefore grow up healthier ammune systems because of it.

Living in a disinfected bubble does the body an injustice since it's not exposed to many common things to develop a resistance too, many things as common as common molds and mildew and mild allegens

Congrats Trilifter7, but I hate to tell you the worrying is just getting started and never stops. Especially with a precious little girl. My little girl is now approaching 40 and I still worry.

My Mom grew up having to run up to the top of the hill in the backyard to use the "outhouse" until she turned 12 years old. They had running water indoors, but not a flush toilet. In the Winter it was bed pans!!! They also had a coal furnace. They had dogs; as they were the new gotta have thing after dinosaurs were getting fazed out, raised chickens, turkeys, grew there own vegetables and hunted.

Your kid will be fine.................let her play in the mud.

My dad did too. Dad didn't have indoor plumbing till he was like between 17 to 19ish. Same thing, running water in the kitchen but nothing else.

We raised 5 kids around wood heat and they turned out fine.. I did create a woodstove fence to keep them away for a few years at my wife's insistence but aside from that no problem.. My old CDW liked to backpuff so it probably wasn't the greatest thing now that I look back.. This stove doesn't backpuff so it is much better for air quality!

Congratulations. You'll be good. I have 2 young boys, one with asthma, pretty bad asthma. I burn mostly coal, some wood no issues with either of them. The older one understands HOT while the younger one felt the need to touch the stove, he's never touched it more than once and I'm pretty sure he got a mild burn.

    Couldn't agree more!!

My 5 year old daughter has loved to help me with our Wood stove and Pellet stoves. We started burning wood the year she was born.

I taught her about the "Hot stove" the same way. It's a natural instinct to not like Hot things.

As far as the dust and allergens? I knock off all dust and any other loose material by slapping the two pieces of wood that I grab together. It may not help a lot. But we have had zero problems with our children. My son is 15 and this is our 9th season of burning Pellets and 5th year for wood. Pellets are cleaner, but every bag you empty , a lot of fines (saw dust) goes into the air.

Congrats on the the new addition!! Hope the baby and mama are happy and healthy !!

wildwest nailed it with that post of the commercial

    Congrats on the baby....soon.
Just wait until you take her shopping in a grocery cart and pick something off the shelf and see her gnawing on the handle!!!
Kids got a lifetime full of germs ahead of her that there will be no stopping!

My first born; I would not let the grandparents hold him until they put there cigarettes down or out! Did think anything of it holding the baby to their face with a cigarette hanging out of their lips! :picard:

I agree, our little guy (almost 2 now) goes up to the stove and stops right about the spot where the radiant heat starts to become intense (couple feet). We have always had a fireplace screen up in front of the stove but honestly, now he is tall enough to reach over and touch the stove if he chose to.
He has known nothing other than wood heat...no issues at all here.
As far as checking with your doctor...depends on you doc, but my guess is chances are high you'll get some kinda "greenie" save the earth answer

I wouldn't give it a 2nd thought. Is your wife a "clean freak"??? If so; she'll need training or "re-education' camp for wood burners!!!!

As has been mentioned prior....................kids need to be exposed to dirt, poop, dust, dirt, "pollution", ash, etc. in order to grow up healthy and without allergies to life!!!

    Good luck with the kidlet!!
