They are interesting to say the least. Nothing like that around here. Kinda looks petrified. Maybe some kind of Cypress? Just guessing here.
My neighbor has a piece in his stone fireplace he 5-finger discounted while out west - that's why I asked
There is a visitors center at the Petrified Forest. When you get to the end of it, there is a display FULL of letters that people had sent after visiting. The letters described the curse that they had experienced after taking home pieces while visiting the park. People where mailing their souvenirs back to lift the curse. Pretty interesting.
Didn't see this until this morning but of all the wood id posts on here, this is one that I was sure of even before I got to the end of your pics! Most recent purchase of the stuff was 1 1/2 years ago from Colorado trip. I always found it interesting.
The same approach is used (superstition/guilt) for removing souvenir pieces of lava from Hawaii's volcano. Pete's curse.
Once when we were there, they did catch someone lifting some. Big time fines! Talked to a ranger and he laughed saying that he told young kids that at the end of the trip before they could leave, they hung them upside down to see if anything came out of their pockets. But yes, the stuff is in a lot of areas outside the park.
