this morning at SisIL's. It's been dying since she bought the place and it was past due to come down. Right around 20" DBH and all I've got right now is my 18" b/c. Had a slight lean, so I put the notch in that direction. Tree decided to sit down on the bar for a few seconds just as I finished the back cut. Got it out, but the tree wouldn't drop, and I was no longer near the tree, as I didn't trust that it wouldn't do something weird. I kept thinking "I forgot my wedges". The wind finally picked up while I was in another part of the yard, and down it went......with my back to it. Dang it! I wanted to see it go. Maybe someone can help with ID? I can get gooder pics as I need to go back more than once. Very time constrained nowadays. Most branches are very dry, and some are almost falling apart, but the main trunk is very much intact. There was snow and wind coming, so I was trying to at least get it on the ground before that got here.

Well, yeah, some kinda' pine. Scrub, Jack.....dunno'. That's as scientifical as I get. She's got a bunch of these, but this one was toast. If it was a Pin, I'd let her keep the branches.
White pine maybe? I have a half dead one up north and that sucker has branches right down to the dirt.
Hmm, I don't think so......the cones are wrong. Maybe I'll get over there tomorrow and grab a couple more pics.
red pine has round-ish cones but so do some Christmas trees that often get planted in yards as ornamentals ( or maybe kids arbor day trees ) and grow outside their natural habitat and never do so well. the branches make good kindling if you've the time and patience to cut them up. I just smash all but the fattest bits of them with a sledge hammer. ( doesn't work so well with green branches )
Ya know what they say: "when you least expect it; expect it!" Glad all went well! That will keep you in shoulder season wood for a while.
It's a little hard to tell from the long distance pic, but I'm thinking Red pine. My favorite shoulder wood from the species on my land. Make sure to get a pic of the cones. I had a "walk-off" one time too. I hate leaving "the scene", and that time in particular too as hunting season was approaching, and I have a family friend who's been hunting that land for longer than I've owned it. But nothing I was trying was working. I finally gave up and headed for the house for a beer and to come up with another plan. I only got about halfway there before I heard it come down. It was definitely a relief, but like you said, I wanted to see it! I love that part.
I only walked away because my SisIL was way up by the house and her dogs were inside. I stood there watching the back cut for at least 5 minutes ......open, close, open, close, etc. Another 1/4-1/2" in the cut and I'm sure it would have gone down, but I thought it best to get outta Dodge after I got the bar out. This tree is almost dead center of her front "yard", which is probably a couple acres. Oh, and not Red Pine either. I've got several of those here at my place......they've got quite a distinctive look (they're red ).
