So I wanted to quiet my AC-16 "hairdryer" blower down (on the 30-NC stove), and can't spend 170 or so clams on the AC-30 blower. So I experimented a little, and found that a good portion of the noise comes out of the fan inlet. A large yoghurt container and foil tape is just the ticket to quiet that down. I cut the bottom out of the container, and taped it inverted on the fan inlet, which significantly dulled the noise. I also put some tape across the top of the blower cover plate, which reduced some low-frequency noise from the plate vibrating. I'd say the noise is reduced by 1/3 +, and the blower now makes about the same noise on high as it did on low previously. A couple of obvious concerns - is there danger from the heat melting the plastic? No, it is quite cool back there. Does it reduce airflow? Not that I can tell, it is not very restrictive.
Large metal can? Say something like pork-n-beans type?? Metal can; metal housing of fan; no need to worry about yogurt spoiling from excessive heat!
