Here is the current setup. I still need better ear protection. Obviously I don't cut wood in my socks. I have a summer and winter set of Redwing steel toes.
I still worry abouth something like this and really make sure to brace both hands tight. http://bangordailynews.com/2016/09/...dent-victim-to-hospital-gets-cited-by-police/
bobdog2o02 approves of the socks. But if you put slippers on, he'll go on a burninating tirade. Now as far as ear protection, I don't like to wear any while running a saw. I like to hear what's going on with the tree, both at the hinge and above from branches. Saws are pretty quiet until you give them more bananas.
I tried ear plugs this weekend while felling with a friend. I was still able to hear the cracking of the trunk. Not sure if I would have heard a branch aiming for my head.
Im a bit late to this party but welcome aboard Handsonautotech, nice to meet you Youve got lots of Ponderosa Pines around your property I see as well as lots of elk! We have some pretty big herds out here as well.
Thanks for the welcome. My friend and I cut down two ponderosa's out of the upper meadows this weekend, standing dead. Measured 18% after a fresh split. Set it in the sun for two days and it is keeping me warm as I type this. Makes a pretty fire in the Heritage. Friend said it is a nice "hard" pine.
Yeah I like dropping standing dead softwoods as well, from the forest to the stove in one day . We have ponderosas about 45 minute highway drive south of me but they are slightly lower btu than lodgepole pine which I have an abundance of very close to my house so I tend to stick closer to home. If it was all around me Id be happily burning it. Up here we dont have much hard wood either but have a bit of birch but its hard to come by. Mostly I burn doug fir, larch and lodgepole pine. Nice to hear you have a good connection for hardwoods. That must make you happy! Sounds like you have the sickness like the rest of us and will fit right in! We love talking about all things firewood. I have to keep my chit chat about it at social gatherings to a minimum because most dont share my enthusiasm but here you are given free reign! In case you haven't seen a good btu chart yet I've included the one I use. You can scroll through it and pick out your woods. Sweep's Library - Firewood Heat Value Comparison Charts
