So call it antsy or nervous or whatever when I see wood I want to be the first to the prize...otherwise I feel cheated...
I learned a while back; "Relax...there's always more wood." Still waiting for that big Bodark score though, as I've missed out on a couple already. I've only gotten a third of a cord total, so far. Just biding my time....
Lucky you. My city won't let anybody have the wood from trees they take down. I tried before and was turned down. They chip the limbs and haul the trunks to a dump to rot.
Ok here's the proof it really happened --I'll try to put them in order--3 pics of the process and 2 of the haul....
I can see why you were a little nervous working right on the edge of the road. Was it a high traffic area?
By the third load it was school bus time and the "take" was right across from a nursing home that must have been having a raffle on "depends" with the ins and outs going on---but the first two runs were non-eventful---and I'm still smiling...PS sorry for the duplicated photos--hey moderator-man...you can fix that right?
This made me smile Scavenger, I totally know where you're coming from! When you see a massive potential scavenge and all you can think about is how you're going to get as much home as fast as you can. Then, when you rock up your heart is pounding and you try to keep a level head whilst testing (in my case) your cars suspension to very the limit. You then have a very cagey drive home aware that A) your car may well buckle under the weight and B) you now have the stopping distance of an oil tanker. I refer to this as a Wood Twitch and is generally only satisfied by a car load or three! For anyone who surfs it's directly comparable to when the waves are awesome and you're tripping over your feet as you try and get into your wetsuit as fast as possible or if you haven't got laid in a while and your wife / girlfriend tells you to get upstairs with a face that means business!
Good analogy English....I'm stihl working on making that last phrase a reality...and I don't mean the wet suit...had the twitch for sometime now....
Final words on the take....this morning I had to take a drive and as I approached my scrounge area there was the tree company....that one that sounds like a sneeze...Asplhunda or something like that....three trucks...a chipper or two...and a couple guys directing traffic....signs of warning in both directions....they were taking the trunks down....and I had to laugh to think that woman with the toy chainsaw was just there yesterday making 3 hauls....moral of the story? Timing is everything....cheers!
Going to resurrect this thread to tell y'all about the phase 2 takedown just as close to my house but in the opposite direction---Saturday intended to cut and haul that tree that blew down (see Hobbies and Interests--"anyone like to cut and split wood" for picture) but my toy saw refused to start...took it to the stihl dealer thinking he could quickly adjust it but the tech was not there so I went to my place of work and borrowed the old Poulan got on site and couldn't start the blasted thing--got stuck in the yard and had to 4-wheel out mudding the truck--so pizzed and frustrated went to the spray wash then to add insult to injury there was the tree company at this new spot starting to take down the 7 maples---grrrrrr.....so fast forward to Sunday I reckoned I moosie down and see what the damage was and without the saw was able to bring back a whole load as pictured....no one seemed to notice...I'm lovin' it!
