Had left my number (and some donuts) the last time the highway department helped me scrounge some wood. Got a call this morning that I should drop by the yard... Both red oak, fairly clean, between 24 & 30" diameter, and about 15' long each. One had been standing dead at least 2 years, the other was still live when they cut it. They were in the way of a new sidewalk project. The second picture is a straight trunk section leaning against a crotch from another tree. The standing dead has no bark and a moisture content of just over 30%, the other trunk was about 36%. Proves it don't dry 'till it is split. The stuff in the background of the first picture is what is usually on their wood pile, rotted branches that fell during storms. Most of that stuff goes through the shredder to become free wood chips. KaptJaq
~!! WOW !!~ Perfect fire wood A joy to split that stuff Doughnuts & doughnut holes for this one !!!! 460 made some nice cuts Sharp chain !
I love this stuff. Beautiful score! Any problem getting those big boys loaded? Proof donuts have magical powers!
Brought a maul & wedges with me. Bucked to 22" then quartered the rounds before I tried to put them in the truck... And yes, the clean red oak rounds do split easily.. KaptJaq ps: It is getting cooler out, next time I'll bring coffee with the donuts...
Touched-up an old chain before I went. First cut I hit a steel hook that was buried 5" under the bark, it had been there a long time. Not wanting to waste time I quickly swapped to a brand new, aggressive chain. Love the way it cuts with a new chain. I have to improve my touch-ups a little... KaptJaq
Bummer I just ran mine into a piece of gravel in the yard Throwing dust now Be filing it before next use.
