    And speed?? Hell, I didn't bite my fingernails waiting?? I ended up biting a finger off before a thread would load over there. We aren't moving at warp speed. But we're moving :thumbs:

    X 3... Great thread. Before the GTG, I'd like to have some do several chains for me :whistle: An 18", 20", 25", and 2-28". :zip:

    What ends up making me lose track Kenis, is that when I get a bunch of emails from various sites, I may end up just deleting the lot of them without following the link they give me. When I do that on a V B site, I still get another email when the thread I'm following gets another reply. On these sites I don't. I don't know if there's anyway this can be configured to work differently, but I wish there was.

    As far as deleting? I don't think there is a way around it. Unfortunately....

    I know it's a PITA, but I have 3 emails. Personal, Forum, and other chit (AOL, Gmail, and Yahoo accounts). So all my emails for this forum all go to a single email account, then AS, and any other 2nd party emails will come through there. Then my 3rd is my personal email (PayPal, eBay, work, CL, etc). Seems like a lot, but on my phone I can keep it all pretty organized.

    There have been some issues with alerts Randy I think it's got something to do with the non dedicated server. The issue seems to be that the forum stops sending notifications randomly even though your subscribed to a thread. It drives me nuts sometimes....

    Like was said before ,great thread ,i can't believe what some of the shops send out as satisfactory work on chains ,good for guys to be able to do it themself ,someday i will get this sharpening thing down myself

    Going to bring this back up to the top. Been trying to go through this and a couple other threads to figure out how to start sharpening chains.

    Well, first lesson that I got was Oregon and Stihl chains are not the same. Cause I got the 4.8mm and 5.5mm, but need the 5.2mm for mine. So I'll be making a run to the Stihl dealer next week...

    You can use the same files for both. The 13/64" will put a tiny bit more hook on the cutter.

    You ahhhh speak-ah da metric language, my brain hurts tonight, what's all that in English units? 5/32, 3/16, 13/64, and 7/32 are all the files you need for 3/8ths Picco/Low-Pro up thru 3/8ths standard.

    Yes, 13/64 is what is called out on the Stihl Paper that comes with the chain. But the Oregan calls out for I guess there chain as a 7/32. I got one chain that I was going to play with, the rest has been sharpened. But when I placed the 7/32 file against the tooth. You could tell it was a bigger diameter than the shape of the tooth. Can I just reshape it then?

    All my chains have been sharpened by my neighbor, but I figured as I'm getting into this more I need to learn. Just don't understand all the stuff yet, still hesistant about jumping in with both feet.

    I used a 7/32" on my 3/8" Stihl RSC chains. The first time to sharpen them, the file will not go between the back of the raker and the front of the tooth at a 30 Degree angle. Some, you could insert the file at 90 degrees and then turn the file 30 degrees to sharpen the tooth. On other chains, I had to take a raker file and remove a little from the back side of the raker to get the file in position for the first sharpening. After the first sharpening it was smooth sailing.

    The 13/64" will give you a sharper hook angle but that seems to wear off in a hurry?

    Just file down in the gullet area about 90° or so one stroke and the 7/32" will usually fit.

    Ok, that makes sense. Just didn't want to ruin a chain, by changing the contour. I'll try it here in a bit.

    Edit:

    Well I just got done with it. I noticed that in one direction the teeth filed easier, than the other. I noticed that some teeth the file fit in better than others. I'll need to get a set of calibers to see how they compare on length eventually. But I think it went fairly decent, and another round or two this should smooth out a bit as they are set to the file dimension. I'll try it out here in a bit.

    File from the inside of the cutter out. The extra noise and different feel is the chrome on the cutter ruining your file. ;)
