These 2 fittings are dumping fluid big time. I can move the whole valve. I think my buddy hit it with something. When I tear it down what should I use to seal it. I was told not to use Teflon tape. Seems like a poor set up. I can't believe. How easy it is to move the whole valve. Thanks in advance for the information guys!
my recommendation and not a nechanic.. is drain it first.. pull the line there should be some of rings in there replace those.. then I use pipe dope for hydraulics available at any hardware store or tractor supply.. if you just want to patch it I have done that with lok tite hydraulic
Is that 3" pipe nipple between the valve and cylinder the only thing supporting the valve bank???? If so that's a prime spot for failure due to vibration and wear from activating the valve.
I still use quite a bit of teflon tape. Just put it on right & clean it up if you ever disassemble. I also use the loctite sticks. Replace the worn nipple & build a support bracket for the valve.
The issue with teflon tape is sloppy use of it and getting some if into the system. Keep it away from the very end of the threads. I have not had the best results with the paste thread sealant, it seems to take forever to harden.
loctite 545 is all we use on our heavy equipment plus all I use in my shop for hydraulic fittings.part stores will have to order it for you,not a common sealant they keep on the shelves here in mid-michigan
If it wasn't leaking before and now it is, and if it got hit, the fittings probably got cracked. You might have to look real close to see it in side the threads.
Once you bump a fitting loose it will leak since the pipe thread sealant was dried up. Use a good thread sealant like RectorSeal No. 5 You can use Teflon tape with it also, but mentioned above, start back one thread from the end so the tape doesn't get like this
I think my buddies splitter is that same design and fitting like that . it's some brand that starts with M... like Moehr or something like that?
Hey Thor I have the 27 ton Dirty Hand Tools splitter. Ive had it about 6 months. I bought it from Lowes and ut was "pre assembled" at the store. I knew exactly what it was when i looked at the valve. I had the same problem abot 2 cords in and it was at the same spots as yours. I completly took the valve off and used teflon tape, being careful not to get any in the line as mentioned above and then used pipe dope on top of the teflon tape. Once I did that and reassembled it, filled it back up with hydro fluid and bled the system, no leaks since. I heard everybody with a DHT splitter was having trouble with that type of leak. Its basically because Lowes quickly assembles them and sticks them outside. They should use the teflon tape and pipe dope but they don't. I knew looking at it that it would eventually leak and it did. I just waited to take it off until the leaks started. You shouldn't have any more issues with it if you were able to get the fittings tight again. Good luck.
Good work. I know what to do with his. it's not a DHT spitter. he has had it close to 20 years I bet.
