Of the year will be lit about 30 minutes prior to Game 1 of the World Series. Cut up a couple of old pallets this afternoon, and that will be the fuel. House is 58*F now; and while the dogs love it, I do think it's time.................to at least make sure no birds or squirrels made nests in my chimney!!
It's ok...light it up. There is no shame in doing so, and there is no prize either for having the coldest house or the most icicles hanging from your nose. The greatest prize is the one you get when you light that baby up again only to wish you had done it sooner. Welcome to another heating season! I just lit up for the first time yesterday and my house was 64.
Just loaded the 3rd small load of pallet wood..............house is already 74*F and climbing with this 3rd load.
No way would I wait until the house was that cool before lighting up. One reason we burn wood is to stay warm. Enjoy the heat.
Burning more of those pallets I cut up now. It's 46*F outside, and raining. Had at least several inches of rain since it started.
Whitey, our ground is white here but the snow has let up quite a bit in the last 10 minutes. I don't think it will stay long. It is 33 degrees.
UPDATE: Here it is November 6, 2016................and I've not had to light my stove since my last post in this thread!!!! Tomorrow I head to FL for a couple days of work, and the weather forecast is for the mid 50's to low 60's next week. With weather like this, it's easy to get ahead on wood!!!!
It's been mostly sunny with high skies during the day...............makes for a lot of solar warming in my house..................With weather like we've been having, it's 68-70*F in my house before sundown. Makes no sense for me to light the stove at all; even if the house temp drops to 58-60*F overnight, because it warms nicely during the day. I'm into the last few rounds of a big time ash score................I'm almost sweating like it's "going out of style" it's so warm splitting the stuff with my Fiskars X-25 in this warm weather!!!! And even though my stove draws fine at these warmer temps; I figure, what the Hell.....................let's get ahead on wood now............................ and burn WHEN I REALLY NEED IT....................not if'n its get a little chilly in the house first thing in the morning...!!! Cowboy Up Regards!!!!
Me too cause the wife would kill me.. she's a loving wife so she would check on me first and call a doctor!
so many comments none family friendly.... ummm at 58 degrees my wife would be wearing 4 layers of clothes.. at 82 in stove room she is in her silk night gown.. I am 45 been married for 5 years on veterans day and best 5 years of my life... temp outside youth hunting day is 37 degrees ... 20 mph wind.. house is nice... I came in she handed me a jack n coke... that's why I hoard firewood before my wife no woodstone oil stats set to 50.. I was then and now... but if your happy whitey more good for you
There is a nice story! Especially the part of how the ladies should be dressed in the house. Too many clothes? Put another log on the fire.
I finally lit my second fire last night, and not just because my wife asked me if we were having one; I had already hauled up a load of Red Maple in the wheelbarrow, to the on-deck circle. It was 66 in the house....it will only recover a couple degrees during the day if it is warm and sunny. That's if the basement is still pretty warm from summer temps. Anyway, with night OAT headed below 40, it's going to be 65 or below in here by morning unless I take action. Apparently you have sled dogs or something...my dogs don't like it too cool in here, any more than I do. The Lab/Dane will curl up in my recliner so that he has sidewalls to keep his back warm. Once I light a fire, he will spread out on the couch, about 7' in front of the stove, and bask in the radiation.
