Nice!! Would think that should burn just fine this winter. Save it for the really cold nights.

Did you re-split the wood so you could get a fresh reading? Nice stack of wood there no matter what it is.

No I didn't , so that's the way you get a more accurate reading

Yes, if you must use a MM, it does no good to just take a reading from an old split or even one that has been split for several hours. It needs to be freshly split and checked in the center of that split to be most accurate. This is part of what I mean when I say there are too many variables and even theories when it comes to using a MM. Still time is the best way to make sure wood is right. Experience will come in very handy too for knowing when it is best. Hang in there, it will come.

Like any tool, there are proper ways to use them. Get a fresh split and retest. The MM is a simple tool to use. If you use it the right way. :)

That said, it looks like black locust to me as well. It's really good wood.

Jeffrey Svoboda You are in for a treat, but only when its cold-COLD! I swear its almost too hot for me to burn-I can have a fire going, say ash and beech and throw a couple splits of locust on and in 20 min the temp spikes 3-5 degrees! It has run me to the crank out windows more than once...nice prob to have I guess-Good job NYCountry

    Agreed on all points-
But allow me to add this:
I resplit (well, my wife did) some cherry yesterday, and when I stuck the middle of the fresh face, split and stacked from last August, the middle was sub 20%, but nearer the sap wood (and bark, which had been errantly laid down facing instead of upward to shed rain) the reading was in the hi 20's.....
So I find it best to hit more than one spot with the prongs (deeply impressed Ashwatcher ), but hopefully not my finger!

Understood Eric VW but listen to me and hear me now...I'm not an innovator or a rocket scientist (not even a stove/rocket scientist) but I can assure you the key that has been discovered is the distance off the ground once C/S/S---I can show you proof, and my MM is true, that I have 18 mo old oak of any variety you choose that is between 3.5 & 7% moisture right now---Face it south-no shade-ensure it receives a min of 12 hrs a day direct sun and if possible place it cross to the prevailing winds and I guarantee it...a minimum of 8" of the ground, you will be amazed by the results). I'm not burning it because I have that luxury but it can and is being done...
