Was just driving by tree removal company cutting wood, asked if logs were for the taking .... they let me take it all. Said it was sassafras wood and that it's good burning wood. I never heard of it , good stuff ??? Pics will be up in fifteen minutes
Smells like root beer. Never burned any, but I got some rough sawn Sass boards from an Amish mill back about 20 some years ago.
I've never had any as firewood either, but I have worked with it in the shop. Based on that, I'd say it smells good and splits easily, but isn't very dense so it is probably more of a shoulder season fuel.
I burn a fair amount of it. Pretty low on the BTU scales, but I'm not a wood snob and burn most everything. It dries out well and makes good shoulder wood. I use it to start fires since it's pretty light. Good score for sure. Once you split it, you will remember that unusual smell it has.
Not much more btu value than pine, very light wood, but smells great when burning. Some in this area use it for smoking, though most use hickory, cherry, and apple. If free, I'd load it up!
Uhhhh just got done splitting it all, extremely easy to split....Theres tons more i just passed by the site again they have all these piles of it ready to be split....but debating on if its worth it for more if such low BTU's....I already have a ton of wood i have to stack and running out of room in garage
The fellas called it. Sparky and not too many BTU's but that can be useful now and then. If it's an easy score I take it.
I love sassafras if only for the sweet smell you get from it when cutting and splitting. Haven't had much for quite some time simply because of all the dead white ash we have but may cut some this winter. We usually burn it except for January and February months. I would not like it in a fireplace because of the sparks but in a stove it is nice. It is not that much lower on the scale than cherry in my book but a bit lower.
