Check with the city hall of all your local towns and see if any have a tree dump.

Good luck. Scrounges are very hard to find. Watch housing development areas, and some commercial construction jobs. Hard because the builders sometimes bring in loggers etc.

Golf courses sometimes have areas they pile wood and other debris.

There's always just driving around and ringing doorbells of people with a tree laying around, or wood that looks like it's sat for a loooooong time. That's worked for me before.

Consider running an ad in the local newspaper. maybe putting up one of those papers that have the pull off tabs.

Keep your eye out when driving around. I will often stop and ask and will keep a generic note that I can leave if they are not home. Note saying something like Noticed you had a tree down. Our family heats with wood...etc if you are looking to get rid of it contact me here.. Thanks for your time.

Like bocefus78 mentioned golf courses can be a good resource.

Our county also allows you to get a permit to cut. If I remember right it is like $25 for 5 cords.

Regulators are forcing the electric companies to do a better job at clearing rights-of-way in PA. Look for freshly felled trees and knock on a few doors. I have been cutting wood for a couple of years at a house where the first few trees were dropped to reposition a powerline. The rest are dead and dying ASh the owner wants removed. I can't hurt to ask.

I think fall is the hardest time to find firewood, because lots of people collect only in the fall. In spring and summer most people aren't thinking about wood and collecting is a lot easier.

Here in Centre and adjacent counties a state forest cutting permit is cheap. Cutting can be pretty easy in some areas, picked over in others.

Edit: This is Centre County PA, the same state as Bucks County from the OP.

Check with some farmers in your area. There are ALWAYS fence rows that need cut back.
I have got literally tons of wood from cutting back fence rows. Now till spring is the season for this. After the crops are in its too hard to get in the fields.
