Got the back porch trim hit with first coat, hope to finish that section tomorrow weather permitting. Was orange, yuck!
Nice looking place ya got Garry! I really like those lapped corners. Cool looking sunset too! Nice pic!
It's actually a log cabin! People are confused due to the milling pattern on the logs. They're 8X8" boxed heart cedar. Definitely a one-off kind of build. I've been working hard to restore it and make it all that a log home should be. Weird part is there was that chimney fire which actually burned off the front corner of the house, so that corner was stick framed back together, and I will have to build some *fake* logs there. Feels disingenuous but at the same time I want everything to match again.
Benjamin Moore Aura Low Lustre. I tried a few brands (Behr and S&W) and liked the Aura the best. Behr had chemical adhesion issues for some reason. Primed it with I think "040 Long Oil Primer" recommended by some contractor friends of mine. So everything was washed, sanded, dusted, primed, recaulked, and painted 2 coats. Took FOREVER.
Glad you approve bobdog2o02. The way I see it, my time is the most expensive part of this project. Cheaping out on the paint will at best save a few hundred and possibly cost a re-do at a much earlier time. All In I think I'm at around $1100 for a job that I got quoted 9K and 12K to do with Regal Select paint, and that didn't include the restoration or trim work that I did. Probably added a little bit of equity Here's another before and after:
Regal is a great paint too and probably would have done just as good as a top coat with the primer you used. My economy choice is Behr Ultra. Behr Marquee is unpaintable, I find it takes the maximum amount of Floetrol to make it workable.
Yeah I had some weird adhesion issues with Behr, I've never seen it before. Same prep with the color samples, the Behr was beading up. No idea why, so I binned them and moved to Ben Moore. Much to my wife's chagrin since my Mother in law works at Home Depot! Been super happy with the service at the local Benjamin Moore dealer, I opened an account and just call in what I need and it's ready and waiting for me when I get there! Still will consider Behr for small interior jobs, I don't dislike the paint and I've done a ton of work with it.
I know exactly what your talking about. I've seen it too. It beads up like your putting it on silicone... when I see that I have a few cans of oil based spray primer that is ready for recoat in 30 minutes and it fixes it right up.
Okay, can you give me any protips on how to best clean brushes that are dirty with oil based primer? I ruined quite a few by not being able to get them clean enough. I feel like I literally need gallons of spirits and I don't have any way to manage the waste so I was trying to make due with as little as possible.
Looking really good. Your efforts paid off. Prep time is always longer, but good prep often means the job will last a long time. I've had a few fail when I failed to be patient with my prepping.
They make a special kind of paint stripper marketed as "brush cleaner" it's 50/50 whether it will torch your brush or clean it. I usually just use old chitty brushes for primer since I know I'll be tossing them.
Very nice work. After all the prep and reconstruction before painting this time, the next paint job should just be painting for you and more enjoyable.
