Went to the tree dump after work and found more birch than we could haul! Mostly cut into managable sizes so I didn't get to run my saws much. Will put some on saw buck tomorrow, though. 20 minutes and we were off with a full load.
One man's junk is another man's treasure. I had someone ask me to come pick up a bunch of paper birch logs from a tree they had someone cut down in their yard. Was glad to take it. Was splitting some yesterday--seems like decent wood. First time with birch for me.
We have had a little black birch way back when, but this is our first major haul pf it. How is yours splitting? The old lady wants to know.
mine splits easy sometimes the bark tears a little hard.. just an fyi.. you need to split every piece as most birch bark is water proof and if not split rots pretty quuck...
At least Grizz has a tree dump, no such thing around these parts. And if there was there wouldn't be much for the taking, there are hoarders everywhere.
Cool picture Adam! Tell her there is no time for breaks/drinks..... Wait. Tell her Backwoods Savage said there is no time for breaks/drinks!
Yard birch rips more than splits in my experience. Forest birch tends to be less of a birch to split. Agreed that it needs to be split right away. If you can't split it, unzip it asap. Run the nose of your chain down the wood vertically (as the tree grew) to separate the bark - this will stop it from rotting as quickly as if it was left with all the bark intact. White birch is a fine wood, but not even in the neighborhood of black birch for heat output imo.
You'll like birch. It's pretty good stuff. Undervalued actually IMHO. 21-22 mbtu's a cord, so it's not chump change. You just have to split it ASAP as it will rot within a couple of months if left in log or rounds.
Black birch is by far my favorite firewood. But I wouldn't hesitate to fill the wood shed with white birch either. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
