I'm installing my first chimney with Excel Class A and UltraBlack stove pipe from ICC. The ICC instructions are mostly a list of ways to inadvertently set your house on fire and don't contain much about how to actually assemble things. My install is through a cathedral ceiling. There's a 17' straight shot of stove pipe between the top of the stove and the ceiling support box. I'm at the point now where I need to actually install that stove pipe. Should I try to build the pipe stack from the bottom up (which would be weird to do as the bottom section is the adjustable section) or do I hang the pipe from the ceiling support box and work my way down to the stove?
With just 3 screws holding the top section to the support box, am I going to have any trouble hanging 17 feet of double wall? Hopefully, they'd put a warning in the manual if there was a potential problem here but it just seems chancy to hang that much weight from 3 sheet metal screws and expect the wall of the pipe not to rip around them.
That's how I would do it because how would you hold the adjustable piece in the telescoped position? It will just slam closed. You could attach that piece at the stove level first but you still have to come down from the support box to meet it.
Actually, you can kinda work both ways, up from the stove, and down from the top, as long as the adjustable portion is coming down, as suggested by Babaganoosh .
Agree with the others. Get the class A up, put a section or two on the stove, then start up top, working your way down, finishing with the telescoping piece in the middle.
Some folks are hell bent on removing their interior stove pipe every year for cleaning. If you can sweep into the stove and clean it out without removing the flue then it doesn't matter. On my BK I lift the flue off of the stove every year to suck out the creo from sweeping. If you don't need to remove the flue then I would put the slip at the top for convenience during installation. Some brands of ceiling support box use a snap in connector and some screw in. A sheet metal screw can support a lot of weight in shear but pulling the screw out would seem pretty easy so the way you go on this might depend on how strong the connection is at the ceiling support box. What stove?
