And I've not even considered lighting my stove yet. We've had a couple mornings that got down into the upper '30's.............and more than a few that dropped into the low/mid '40's................but we still warm up enough during the day to not warrant lighting the stove up. I'm a hard azz though..............not a wimp like some here!!! Wimp=love and respect.
Aw, c'mon MightyWhitey ! You don't get any extra points for waiting any longer....light that 13 off! And, I see you've used my favorite phrase in your signature!
I'm leaving "bright and early" for North Dakota on Friday, October 14 for my annual duck/goose hunting trip up there. Still haven't lit my stove yet.............so; the earliest it could be lit this burn season will be October 22 late when I get home. This is the latest I've ever had to wait to light my stove since I've started burning..................5th year now. Just haven't needed it so far IMHO!!! I'll post report of my hunting in the other forum, after I get back.
I'm back, and still no need for the stove yet...................got up to 71*F yesterday, and while it's only in the upper 50's today, it's bright and sunny so all the window shades are open to let the sun warm the house. As I type, the house is 67*F. JFYI also.................I do have the wood to burn, I just don't see the need for it yet. We've not even had a frost here yet, and I'm only 5 miles South of the "curtain"!!
I have my stove on about every night. My wife starts her siren noise for the heat if the temp in here gets below 74F
I like 72 and up , 68 if I'm just sitting around I will put on a sweater , once in awhile I turn on electric heater to heat just one room , or I make a fire the size I need . Cold stove starts , not a big deal to me. Anything below 68 in the house i'm sure makin fire
67 is comfortable for house temp. I wouldn't light either! It was 59 in the basement workshop/computer station yesterday when I burned two loads in the kicker stove.
Still to this date today............11/15/16............I've only lit my stove 9 times this "so called" "burning season"!!!! I'm cheap.............I admit it..................... But not too cheap to keep my house warm..............................In All Honesty fellow wood burners..........................I've not needed it at all!!!
I've fired about maybe 6 loads so far. I shamefully admit, a couple times it was only down to 67 in here. I see a couple nights in the 20s coming this weekend, though, so it'll be some legit fire-ups.
I'm a bit stubborn, and cheap, so hold out to the last minute. I let the house temps dip into the upper 50's before I lit my first fire. But it only takes overnights into the low 50's or upper 40's to get my house temp down without some amount of heat, so that happened like a month ago. At some point I finally realize a few splits of free spruce is plenty during these mild days and wondered why I suffered through house temps down in the mid 60's, then low 60's, then upper 50's for days and days lol.
Got the power/gas bill yesterday and it turns out that the gas portion of it was around 35 for the last period....but I've had the OWB on for almost 2 weeks now. Would've been higher if hadn't lit it back on the 4th. And no "scrimping" on the t-stat while it's lit also!
The weather liars are calling for 70*+ tomorrow/Thursday here; just South of the cheddar curtain!!!!!
