Be firing up some cherry here shortly...Weather back to 80 high, 55 low in a couple days...I just need to burn and smell that aroma...40 and 39 forecasted for tonight and next---Like I need an excuse...
Let's just say I'm addicted to the bush..great hunting plenty of wood for heat and projects. And love my new chainsaws and still keep the old ones working too. My dream is too build a cabin just for the fun of it and learn how. Plan on using a logosol mill and chainsaw. I've been hoarding windows and doors and the like just for a project like this.
The higher summits had 35° during the afternoon with 50mph winds, giving a WC of 19° with ice and snow. Kinda foiled our plans to get high up today!
With 24°F for overnight temp tonight, I'm just not satisfied with only an oil blower and pellet stove.(both heat just fine, but I need wood! ) I am starting to look at different woodstoves trying to decide what I wanna do. I have a kiln dried wood connection now, so maybe I'd get a deal to start out with dry stuff.
I'm wondering what would be the cost comparison between buying pellets and kiln-dried wood. Finding a good used stove at a good price is difficult, you got to jump on it if you find one, but the big problem is most people put very little information in their ads, some of them don't even know what brand the stove is much less a model number, trying to get information from them is not easy, expecially if there is no phone number to call and you have to email them.
This morning it was 39 according to my car at 6:40 when I left the house. Currently at work and at home it's now 62. Keep in mind that was car temperature gauge. The local low called for 44. The past few mornings we woke to our bedroom at 56. Last night I turned on our DeLonghi TRD40615E Full Room Radiant Heater in our bedroom. Yeah I've still not come up with a solution. Most likely going to try and get through this winter with the electric heaters again, and save money for a permanent solution. Anyhow, with setting it at 71 on the unit, the room was 67 degrees this morning. Not too bad. Then again, we are not talking about a full day of sustained low temps. Wood stove downstairs is only waiting on me to clean the chimney. The plan is clean it with my son on Saturday. It will be great to get it going again. The warm compared to our forced hot air system does not compare.
We've found that most car thermometers are quite accurate. However, if you park in a garage or carport, it might take a few minutes of driving to get the accurate temperature. Same thing goes if the car has sit still out in the sunshine. Drive a couple miles and the temperature will even out. It is always interesting when they give triple digit readings or below zero readings too. Then there is that stupid warning that ice could be present.... NO! How could that be when the temperature is below freezing? Dummies.
I burn a baker's choice cookstove.I really like it. Top load it or front load it.Wife likes it,the oven door swings out instead of down. 6 loaves if bread can bake simultaneously. Venison roast is cooked nice and slow. Fr pure heat just leave oven door open and it will cook ya out. Pretty good sized firebox too.
We hit 35° here yesterday morning and 32° this morning. Had two fires in the NZ, only a handful of splits each, and one small reload before bed, it was more than enough to keep the chill out. Looks like another one on slate for tonight.
We had a deep freeze over night, but temps recovered nicely during the day worth another beauty tomorrow!
I just checked the long range forecast through the end of the month and sadly I don't see a fire. A couple of cool nights but, like Woody Stover, we'll get by without a fire. I'm more ready this year than ever. The pipe is clean as a whistle and the new catalyst is in place just waiting for a light off. There's about a half cord of red oak, split and stacked for 5 years, on the porch wiht a fair quantity of 3 year old ash and a fair pile of silver maple for those first fires. Bring it on!
