Don't even get me started, while it may be true about the guns, we have lost plenty with this BAFOON. I cannot even stand to look at him.....I'll quit now. ***** The only thing our tv gets used for is the occasional weather channel or I will turn on TBN
I have been honest about things but they are spread out in the forum here and there. You give me too much credit. A dear friend donated money for the chimney; I built it cheaper by scrounging for the parts when I could; mostly on ebay. I got the through-the-wall kit for about a third of what a new one would have cost me. Some of the sections I did have to buy from Lowes but I kept searching the net for deals and found a couple on Menards; although they did cut the price of the roof guy after I purchased it. It took me awhile to gather the parts but the cost was way cheaper that just getting everything at Lowe's Home Improvement. I question the friend about the money for the chimney but he said I had done so much for him that it was just repayment. As for the stove, I am still paying on that purchase bit by bit; did get a good deal when Lowe's did a 10% off deal and I used another 10% off discount card; that put the price down to the 30-NC plus pad costs and I like the rectangular window better than the arched windows on the 30-NC. By building my own stove pad/hearth, I cut the cost to a 1/4 of what a ready-to-go pad would cost me. I would definitely like a larger income; it would make life easier. However, yes, one can live on a lower income if they don't mind living frugal and I do live frugal. The cost of getting wood heat will probably pay for itself this winter, or a big chunk of it. Electric heat is expensive heat; which is why I would keep the thermostat on 46-48 F and shut off most of the rooms. Another reason my friend helped with the chimney, he did not like the idea of me being cold, he said it was not good for my health. I am a bit worried about him because he will be in the path of the hurricane and I have not been able to reach him. Oh, another way of being frugal is that I use Google Voice for communications; works quite well and the cost is right. I don't travel any more than I have to; to the shops for groceries and combine errands in the same travel. Plus I do my own auto repairs; I had to do some work replacing the upper plenum and doing the lower intake gaskets. I found the upper plenum on ebay, new in a sealed box for about half or so of one from an auto parts shop and the lower intake for $59 on ebay for name brand. You have to not mind waiting and doing a lot of searches. I also found some good deals on Rock Auto in their clearance; got a complete rear wheel cylinders for when I do the rear brakes and the price was what a kit; the cups etc would cost; these are ready to just bolt on. It can be done if you don't mind scrounging. Food, yes. I have garden space here and the tractor was Dad's; passed to Mum and then to me. Of course I would much rather the Old Girl still belonged to Dad; I miss Mum and Dad every day. I need to dig the sweet potatoes in case the hurricane comes inland enough to drop rain. Mum taught me how to preserve food, pressure bottler; was hoping to make some more pear relish but the weather was not so nice this spring. The bad news is the big freezer Mum brought is getting ready to go out; of course I can do with a smaller one now that Mum and the twins are not here. I am looking at one around 10 or 14 cubic feet should work. I prefer to freeze my green beans instead of pressure bottling; they stay crisper. Another frugal tip, check the meat counter for the sale by date; I buy my meats when they are on offer because of the sale by date; another bonus of having a freezer; I can buy the cheaper family packs and I then separate and put in freezer bags. I would like to raise some chickens and even a hog; although I would have to hire out the butchering part; have helped to do it but don't like to do it. Maybe I can work on a chicken hutch this winter. OK, that is enough, I am getting too windy here. However, I think everything gets the idea of being frugal.
One of the people I respect most in this world lives off 12k a year here in NY. Most of it the state takes. Self sufficient and frugal. Provides her own meat with a 22 mag out her kitchen window several times a year!
i think i finally have the lovely and gracious wife that having cable tv is a waste. i haven't watched it for almost 3 years thanks to this site and others that i follow. Since then i have read more than i did in any 3 year stretch, i have learned to carve, learned to weld and raised my woodworking to a new level. i also have started to really nail the "honey do" list. when momma is happy, everybody is happy.
