For the first time in over a month, I won't be working on this, this weekend! Time for some firewood! :stacke: But, where to begin? I've had a bunch of stuff that came down recently that I haven't had time to get to. We had a pretty good t-storm a few weeks ago, and it blew the top off of this ash: Dead elm out front that suffered the same fate. The town has since cut it down and pushed it to the entrance of my trail. There's 2 other small ash laying in the weeds there too. Half of this double snag came down too - ~18in red maple. Course there's the "8 red maple windfall" too... But maybe I should focus on the stuff I already have up at the house...
Sure thing! It's for a local bar - Calhoons Pub in Newfane. Red maple that I sawed from my own trees. I made a thread about it in the DIY room. Restaurant Booth Project | Firewood Hoarders Club
Shawn, looks like you took the bark off the live edge...correct? If so, how did you do that? Powerwasher?
Yeah the bark had to come off. Some of it had fallen off already; and the rest would too eventually. I used a sharp draw knife to peel the rest off and to scrape off most of the cambium layer too.
Shawn, it appears you can start just about anywhere. Makes me feel better rather than feeling alone being so far behind. But you will catch up faster than I will.
Looks like a good time, no matter where you start! Ahh man those tables...love em man! Are you going to dismantle the holzhausen this year? That thing has got to be ripe by now?
No. Yeah it's gonna be a while before I get around to burning that I think. That's actually what I ended up doing today - thought it Might be a good idea to do some MM testing on the wood I planned to burn. It was all good to go, but to my surprise some of the ash that I split this year was testing even lower - some was as low as 7%. It's in a really great spot - south facing, full sun all day. So my girlfriend and I moved a row of that plus some leftovers from last year up onto the porch - about 2/3 cord. I'll probably bring another row of pine up tomorrow. I cut the ash down too. It was exactly 1' at the base. It was pretty straight but there was a turn at 3'. I think I'll try to make some boards out of that and the next 8', and I'll chop up the rest for firewood tomorrow. I found my long lost tongs too!! Now I've got a guest pair - should come in handy!
Spray those tongs fluorescent orange and it'll be hard to lose them. Those benches and tables get sweeter looking every time I see them.
I decided to top off the porch today with more of that kiln dry ash, to make some more room for all the ash that I grabbed today. I cut one up a few weeks ago but hadn't picked it up yet, and I grabbed several other small ashes in that area that had blown over in the tstorm. Two heavy trailer loads - should be the 2/3 cords I need to fill my ash pallet. And I'm enjoying the spoils right now as we speak.
