Thanks Oldman, not many mature ash on the property but there's a healthy population of 4"+ diameter ash trees I will let mature. Ash is nice to work with, splitting it with a splitting axe goes fairly quickly. Large Oak, not so much fun.
Welcome, Rook! I can't believe that I am already jealous of your hauler and supply :stacke: , and it has only been one day since you joined. Great work!
I will admit I am very blessed and grateful for what came with the house. That tractor has easily paid for itself already in a year. I would love to go through the it and fully restore the old girl, she deserves it.
Tractor, family, firewood, autumn colors! Can't get much better in my book! Welcome! Sent from my iPhone so pardon any autocorrect bollocks
What is that old mule? I caution you to completely delimb the tree before dragging it, the trunk could twist and a limb could snag and you suddenly find a bad situation. Also, please always pull BELOW the axle; the tractor could tip over backwards and kill you. It would be best to have a ROPS on the tractor (roll over protection system). I am looking to add a ROPS to my tractor; Dad's old 8N. Now that I have said that, welcome to FHC; you won't find a nicer bunch of folks anywhere else.
Thank you for the safety tips, that is the exact kind of information I was looking for here. I do take it extremely slow when towing but will de-limb from here on out, makes perfect sense now that you mention it considering the logs weight and length. Is there a foldable ROPS bolt out there? I ask because this 1970 Ford 3400 had been stored outside for the majority of its life and now sleeps indoors in my garage and a static ROPS would not fit.
Yes, that is going to be a problem for me as well, my shed door will not allow a ROPS on the tractor. However, I am only thinking about mounting it when I am using it in situations that I am concern; like pulling and working on inclines. My property is very hilly so that is one reason I am more nervous about roll-over and tilting over. Plus, the wheelbase on my 8N is narrow.
