Well, I braved the heat and started on the red elm that came down in a storm a while back. Pretty much filled my 2010 Tacoma. There's probably one more load to go, but I just thought I'd share!

Looks good and time to start the seasoning process. That should make for some good firewood.

I'll let you know in a couple of years. This is the first I've ever had. With all the dead ash that's 98% of my stacks. Looking forward to trying it.

Not sure what that is but I don't think it's Slippery (Red) Elm. That sapwoood is huge! Bark doesn't look right, either. Can you get a pic of any leaves?

I have to agree that it doesn't look like red elm usually does. Can't see the bark well but looks more like american elm.

I thought the same when I saw your picture. Does not look like red elm to me.

I'm not sure what it is, maybe it's something better?

If it's American elm, you'll love it,

As long as you have a wood splitter that is. You might go insane if you only have a maul.

But trust me, it's good firewood.

    It's
I posted pictures of the leaves here a while back. I think if you search for the title "Is This Red Elm" you'll find them. The general consensus then was red elm, or maybe Siberian elm. If I remember correctly, on American elm leaves the lobes at the leaf stem are the same shape while red elm has one smaller than the other.

I split 3 small pieces with a maul; the first split with one swing and the second and third split with two

I have burned a lot of American elm, I don't think we have Red Elm up here. I've never heard of it before you guys mentioned it. Anyways when I used to split by hand, all I know is Elm likes to eat wedges. Try getting them out, good luck.:hair:

Yeah, not American elm then. I've never had a single round of elm that's split in one swing of my maul.
I think red elm is pretty similar burning as American though. I really think that no matter what wood you burn, it's great to have at least a couple of types of wood, not just all one kind.

The charts I see have American at 19.5 and Red at 21.6 so there's an appreciable difference. :fire:
I can't quite tell from those leaf pics if that's a doubly-sawtoothed leaf. You are in range of Winged Elm, which has a doubly-sawtoothed leaf...but Audubon describes the bark as "thin." I'm still not buying Slippery Elm on this one. Don't you just love a good mystery? :)

For sure not American or Chinese Elm. I'm beginning to think Siberian Elm because the leaves are smaller and nothing else except red elm matches the shape of the leaf. Anyway, hit's farwood and in 3 years hit'll burn just fine no matter what! :salute:
