Who said old, used-up diamond masonry blades were worthless? Not this guy!!

Turns out those old blades are just the right hardness for making custom spikes, here's what I whipped up last evening in the shop. Even named the old saw "Davey Crockett".......being it's on the way to become one bad-azz old Pioneer!

Factory RA spike from 1957 on the right, custom on the left....

Holes drilled, shined up with a flap disc and ready to install....

Inner spike installed and ready to lay out the bar stud-moubted outer spike...

Getting ready to flap disc the outer spike. You can still see the Dewalt paint.....lol

Both spikes shined up, ready to install....

The saw looks quite intimidating now.....that oughta dig in good!

I wanted a lower configured spike, to act as a "kickstand" for the long bar on the saw. Still gotta fabricate a strut for between the two spikes at the bottom. That will happen today. Also going to make the custom cylinder shroud this evening too. One step closer to sending it away for port work....

    Yep. That's the plan......

I'm researching it, not expecting any miracles but it's my current fling, at any rate I wanna build a toy out of this saw. It's a cast iron-sleeved cylinder, I gotta talk with Randy and get some input as to the viability of the whole idea first....

Nice work Scott! I like the way this one is shaping up so far!

With a little extra worke those blades also make great knives.

I've thrown a pile of these blades out. Wish I'd have kept them...

Tons upon tons in every scrap yard across 'Merica. Sometimes I feel like I come back from the yard with more scrap than I took! Heck I've even picked them outa the bin at the recycling center.

I have a feeling from just what I am seeing, that this build is going to be pretty impressive. Nice fab work.

Looks like quite the project Scotty, always liked these early pioneers, I wouldn't try to get too crazy with port work, these old dogs just like to run strong and slow, but if you do hop it up some, it will be interesting to see the end result.....:)

That's kinda what I'm aiming for.....
Maybe just opening up the ports in the sleeve a little, and match porting the muffler to the case.

Gonna get a 10 or 12 pin rim and see what it does with a 16-18" B/C....

Finished up fabricating the shroud this weekend, also installed a custom air filter (the stock filters on these RA'S weren't very reliable and/or effective). Made a pattern for the custom air shroud out of cereal and Cheez-It boxes, laid the pattern out on some sheet metal, cut it out and MIG'd it together. The whole project is almost complete, one more little chore to do and I'll be able to plow some wood with it this week. Later this winter, she'll get tore down, stripped, powder coated and match ported.....

I think you should widen the ports and then match port the intake and the exhaust. Advance the timing and bump up the compression a little. Heck you have all these other custom touches
going there so I say go for it.

The spikes turned out great and what a great idea using the old saw blades. The old Pioneers sure have a nice shape to them and I look forward to more on this saw in the future. Very Cool.
