hi all. With the wealth of knowledge at our disposal here I'm hoping someone can help me here. We had a difficult year this year and lost my father in law back in March. A giant of a man in all aspects of life and a true blessing in my life. He was very much a diy kinda guy never shed away from a challenge. Over. 30 hrs ago he built his own bug zapper. The thing is a beast and would light up his yard at night. Many great memories just sitting outside drinking a beer, just shooting the breeze waiting for something big to land on it. It's been out of commission for a few years and after he passed I asked for it in hopes of fixing it and creating similar memories with my own kids. Attatched are some pics of what I believe is a transformer that is fried and I was hoping you all may know where I could find one. I will take some pics of the complete unit once I can dig it out of my shed. It uses 2 black ligh bulbs
You might get better help if you go up to the right-hand corner select thread tools, change title, put in electrical help needed. Either way you will probably get some more input tomorrow
I think that is a neon sign transformer. I searched fleabay for "neon transformer" and got almost 1000 hits, I think you'll find something to work there...looked like some good possibilitys on the first page...
**4kV / 4,000 volts (5kV RMS) NEON SIGN TRANSFORMER POWER SUPPLY I don't see why this wouldn't work...
Numbers all match on this one. More $$ though New Franceformer 3030 FM 27D1 120V 3000V Neon Transformer Free Shipping | eBay
I have a couple of those. I'll check the specs this afternoon and if it's a match it's yours for the price of shipping.
Ty all so much for your quick responses and willingness to help me out here. I looked at a lot of those on eBay but Shyed away from them because although many of them matched up numbers wise they just didn't look the same. I just got home so I reassembled it real quick so you can see what I have here. The blue tag says it's a gas tube sign transformer issue c-3643 and the metal frame has Jefferson electric stamped on it. The ones I see on eBay all have a pull chain on them and also a plug. I'm resly not gifted in the electrical field so if you all think one of these would work how do I deal with the pull chain and cord issue. As you can see from these new pics everything is sealed inside the top housing. I just run a cord to it for power. Pyroholic that would be sweet if you have one of these. I would be more than happy to pay you for it. Ty all again
As long as the specs are the same, don't worry what the replacement looks like. Well, as long as the replacement fits where you need it to go at least. Electricity doesn't care what looks like either.
Pretty simple really. Cut the cord off to the length you want/need, pull/cut the individual wires of the cord apart for a few inches and then strip 3/4" insulation off the end of each wire. Twist each one to one of the two black wires coming in (doesn't matter which one goes to which one for this application) then screw an appropriate sized wire nut on each wire. If you have a pull chain, turn it to on and the leave it, control on/off however it was before. As for the red wires, same deal, hook one wire each to the transformer output (secondary side) wires, same deal, strip insulation/twist together/wire nut. Reassemble cabinet. Done. Happy zapping! Recap-Black wires to primary (input) side of the transformer, red wires to secondary (output)
I get it. I bought one of those battery powered flyswatters at the local farm store (looks like a tennis racket) I love going around the house zapping bugs now (hold the button too long they start to smoke) We have one at work too, for some reason it has more power than mine. When the the bug makes contact you know it, there is a big spark and a loud CRACK! Maybe I'm just easily entertained...
corkman This is what I have. Maybe a little bigger than what you need. It's a transformer ballast from a 1000w metal halide light. Possibly one of the electrical gurus could saw if it could still be used. Could turn it into a he'll helluva bug zapper with the right info maybe. It may be capable of 110 or 220, but I honestly don't understand these things that well. Let me know if it's of use.
I went ahead and ordered this one today. I'll keep you all posted and hopefully next pics will be of it up and running. Thanks again
