So I decided I better try and figure out how much weight I'm actually hauling around, especially now that I'm thinking about adding a trailer and don't want to throw less wood on the truck to give room for the tounge weight of a trailer. I had always been using the 4500lb/cord figure, was actually thinking I'd be closer to 5000 with how wet of a summer we've had and the wood being water logged. I figure I'm hauling all of two cords on my bed 9'6" Long 7'6" Wide 3'8" Tall, I thought the truck weighed about 5500lbs so I was pleasantly surprised to see I wasn't over the 15k Rating when the scale read this Awesome I thought, enough wiggle room to still fully load the truck when I get a 10k dump trailer. Next day drove on the scale empty, had about 15more gallons of diesel fuel on the tank and the scale now reads So I'm averaging 3100lbs a cord on red/white oak mix that's been cut for about 2-2.5years that has been absolutely dumped on with rain all summer, what gives FHC?
Whats these weight ratings? Lol I think you are shy on how much you are carrying in/on the bed or dump body? Are these logs rounds? If you split and stacked it neatly to the very tippy top you could fit just about 2 cords. I know on rounds I've cut and weighed on my bathroom scale wood calculators are close.
This is being hauled on my 1993 F-Superduty, wood was split and stacked neatly to the top of the rails if not a little higher in the middle. I figured also it was 2 cords that's why I'm so confused about where the weight went too, and the wood feels heavy too, like I said been rained on all summer so even more confusing as to why it's so light. Maybe the scale was off? I've got another load on now that I'm going to test to try and confirm again, stuff just got dumped on with rain too the last 30mins so we'll see.
Scale could be off, is it a certified scale? I thought those trucks were heavier than that. But obviously isn't a stock bed.
You got me, I would have expected closer to 4k each cord, so you are definitely well lower than expected. Can you check the moisture content on a few pieces to see if it is wicked low somehow?
What gives? Well, 2 to 2 1/2 years of drying can get rid of a lot of moisture. As for the rain, for the most part it is like I've always stated; wood is not a sponge. It takes a lot for wood to soak up moisture but of course if it is sitting on wet ground, it can and will. Yet, I've left white ash laying in water for a long time and it has never done harm. One time I left some wood laying on wet ground for 2 years and that area always has standing water for a few months every year; typically spring and again in the fall. The wood was just fine. Naturally it was all in rounds and cut to 16" length.
9'6"x7'6"×3'8" I'm coming up with 260cft, I'm only measuring the part where the wood sits in not the outside bed measurements
im not doubting you didnt like math class, just sayin there aint 2 cord on that truck or im a lyin curdog...
Very insightful, yeah after handling it today and stacking most of it it felt a bit lighter than what I thought when loading, but it's not like it's paper or anything, obviously hard to get numbers for what a "seasoned" cord woupdate weigh, still think this stuff should be closer to 4k, I'll hit the scales again soon.
