Wife found this pic from about 4 yrs ago. Thought you all might like it. this tree was given to me by a friend. It measured 55 1/2" at the bottom and was 30' before the first limb. My friend cut all the limbs off.
The last 3 rounds I was determined to get it done. I stacked it neatly it the truck bed and in the cab.
From the look of the stump, it had been down for a bit at that time-as Eric VW asked,,,has any of it been through the stove or is it pristine dry and ready to go? That is a brute of a tree!
That's my favorite haul. Huge rounds of white oak. Don't get no better than that. I'm betting those big rounds will yield around 60 to 70 4x4 splits each. I'm jealous.
The wood is long gone. I am glad I was able to tackle such a project but if I ever get one like that again. im gonna make sure I have some help. Don't have any other pics. Couldn't get the wife to go back after the first day. HaHa
Wow, denny, what a score! White Oak, the King of Firewoods. How did you get a 55" tree cut into rounds?? Here's a big Pin Oak about 3 miles from us that a guy had the county cut down because he was worried it would fall on his house. Looking at the situation, I never would have cut it down. It was shading his house all morning, and as you can see, there was no rot in the trunk at all. It was protected from high winds by a ridge to the southwest, which is where the heavy weather comes from here.
Sweet! One could wish he had a few acres of trees like that! I'd even go back to wrestling the big saw for those!
I don't recall but I think that was probably some kind of lichen or moss. Haven't heard anything yet about a yellow mold...
That one would have been off to the sawmill. When we timbered some property a few years ago...they paid $1,100 for a 11 ft White Oak log that was 40"diameter. That veneer log was worth a lot more than I imagined...glad I didn't cut it up
