Started my hunting season in Maine last week looking for some bear steaks.. Temps in the 80s-90s all week they were hitting the baits late at night. I did not see any but the couple from R.I. hunting with me got this 458# beauty. Last night last 1/2 hour of the hunt.
Awesome. Bears are making a serious comeback where we live here in Maine. They were driven out years ago by the farmers who not only cleared land, but also killed as many as possible. They have always been around, we saw evidence of them for years in the corn, often knocking down 1/8th-1/4 of an acre per night as they rolled in it. A bear also does not knock down the stalks to eat the corn, they bit off the ears, going down the row and biting just the ear. That is a sure sign you have bears! A few years ago they started showing up more and more. I have never been afraid of them because they do not care much for sheep (I am a sheep farmer) as a whole, and with a great nose and ears, they tend to run off upon my approach and so I never see them visually. But I can smell them like I did yesterday and the day before, so they are around. I also see their tracks where I have been cutting wood. At our old church we had a friend who is involved in a bear study in Maine (in our area) and did a report on it to the soil and water conservation district. It was very informative. Best wishes on your bear kill for the year.
Thanks L T . I was up North of Lincoln at a camp we have fished and hunted at for some 28 years now. Great people, food, and fun.
Sorry to say but no. Deer season starts in R.I. tomorrow then N.Y. Oct. 1st then Mass. Oct. 19th and I have a freezer to refill. Have booked second week of the 2017 bear season, hopefully the temps will be better next year..
