I scrounge all of my firewood and Craigslist is my best source. a week or so ago I responded to a local add for a maple that needed to be cut down. After looking at it and being sure it was possible to take it down without any drama, the owner offered me $50 to haul all of the brush away as well. Today I had just felled it when a man who was well dressed came over, turns out he is the next door neighbor and was asking if the tree had produced any walnuts yet. He showed me the nut shells left by the squirrels, so my great maple scrounge turned into a walnut. so far it has yeilded a full 4x8' trailer load, and I have more to go back for...
THis was after I hauled two loads of black Locust home from only three miles away! another great scrounge, already down and cut. I'm really only used to getting oak and maple, how will these two burn?
Save the BL for those bitter cold January nights...and don't fill your stove with BL only...that stuff will almost melt your stove down! A+++ Firewood. I haven't burnt much Walnut but I hear it is decent firewood...some like it better than others...I know this, let it dry a couple years and burn it, it'll make smoke
Walnut is middle of the road and black locust is top of the line. In that Fisher that black locust will be stellar.
I second that..... A little ashy, but all wood once combusted, leaves behind its leftovers..... Burn it with fire, Rowerwet, next year.
I'm in the same area as you Rowerwet , I don't get a lot of Locust even though it's around. I love finding it when I do! Good for you. Like brenndatomu said, save that Locust for the coldest nights.
Nice score! Maple walnut was my grandma's favorite ice cream. I found one before too - made some cutting boards out of it.
Black locust is good stuff but I found that filling my stove with oak put off more heat. I did it one of the cold days last winter and I ended up having to move the couch about a foot or so away from the stove.
Black Walnut burns nice but would be much more valuable to me as rough cut lumber. Beautiful stuff. BL is fantastic firewood. You'll love it.
Those are nothing short of beauteous! Where you been, Curry? I haven't seen you creepin around lately!
Thanks! I've been really busy - I got commissioned to build a pair of restaurant booths for a local bar. I made a couple posts about it over in the DIY section.
Ah ha, if I would check out the DIY section more often I would have seen that. Shame on me for not utilizing all of the wonderful sections of this great place!
