Since I have no pics, it is story time! Once upon a time, about nine months ago... no not that, keep reading. So back in Dec '15, I intercepted the tree service working in the cemetery near me. That day they dumped a lot of ash wood and chips, and said when they do the rest of the trees I can have that too. Well, this past weekend THREE huge ash trees came down, 200' away at the cemetery. I could have gotten all the wood dumped but I really needed the chips. Got three dumpers of chips and two dumpers of ash rounds, big and small! I have been sorting and chopping wood non stop since yesterday began. I had the big rounds laying ready to chip away at with the sledge 'n wedge lined up near the road. I had chopped my way through the small stuff, and moved onto dinking away at the huge rounds. I had in ear protection and did not hear what was creeping up behind me. I turned around and just a couple feet away from me was a huge bucket of an excavator, just softly tapping on the log like a finger pointing to it. The machine and it's operator were on my street working for the water company. I stepped back with wonder, and the excavator struck down like a praying mantis and busted the huge round apart. In a matter of five minutes, the duo tore through all my big rounds, nimbly resetting the huge halves with the excavator bucket to then quarter them. The wood carnage was delightful to behold, and screw saving up for a wood splitter... that just does one thing! Just imagine, a huge multi-way wedge for an excavator. Back to reality, with my maul and friends. I feel like Tom Sawyer, and let an excavator operator have some fun chopping my wood for me. I think he had that in mind all day, because he arrived at the end of their work day. I thanked him kindly not just for the huge help chunking the big ash, but for getting to watch such an awesome machine working outside the box... or hole.
That's awesome! Gooder for him for helpin ya out, saved you a lot of back breakin' sledgin' n wedgin'! No doubt that was a cool thing to watch, can't say I've ever seen that done. You should buy him a case of big people pop!
I set up another round in case the excavator operator is feeling frisky tomorrow. Tis a story I will tell to the end of my days!
Truly a great story, dusky I read it aloud to my wife......she said, "WOW- that's awesome!" Would really be something to have some pics
