I would say it depends on how you see the role of government as to whether it's ludicrous (jail vs. no jail statement) or not. Libertarian thinking would probably closely follow your thinking whereas others that feel there is some value in having the government playing a role in limiting access to drugs would not concur with your statement.
Interesting discussion. It is refreshing to see it handled so politely here on this forum. But to me, the issue of pot or no pot is about the same as the gun laws issue or abortion or any other . (Lets not start a debate on these please) There is only one way to get say so on any issue that we are concerned about. Some times it seems fruitless to have a say so in how our lives and liberties are controlled by those doing the controlling but you need to speak out in a rational way and keep on keepin on. How many of you know how your elected representatives feel about the issues that concern you? It may seem as if it dosnt do any good but they like votes and if enough people bitch about the same thing it may help your own personal cause. Or not.
My good man, you are indeed right and this applies to both sides of the tree. I learned this from farming where we are heavily regulated (for good reason) and as such we have to fight city hall a lot, because let's face it; when 99-1/2 of the population has no clue what you do, it is an uphill battle. Anyway, to what you say, here is the truth. NOBODY CALLS CONGRESS! For a congressman (or woman) a topic is: Of Interest: When a single person calls and makes their opinion known Is Hot: When 3 people take the time to call Phones are ringing off the hook: When they get 5 calls about the same topic So the next time you wonder if you have any say, ring the phones off the walls of your congressman by being one of FIVE people that call! Just five people can make them thir mind up since they truly want to get reelected!
And I love the hourly wage debate (insert massive amount of sarcasm here). The powers that be are clamoring for higher wages when the people they are going to "help" have already been told if this passes they will be without jobs. Fast food restaurant chains said right now self-ordering Kiosk's are too expensive to implement, but if a $15 minimum wage takes effect, it will be the tipping point and we'll all be using them. Fast food workers are becoming obsolete
I actually slapped a guy in the back of the head once for being ignorant to a fast food worker. The poor woman was 16 years old or so and she did not count back the change and gave the guy the wrong amount. He lit into her like she shot his dog, going up one side of her and down the other and saying how "in his day they counted back the change." I'll put up with a lot, but the one thing I cannot stand is someone belittling someone else. I HATE that. I happen to be a good welder for instance, but I also REMEMBER when I wasn't so good. That keeps me humbled. Anyway I swatted him on the back of his head and just said, "I think that is enough." I probably would be arrested today, but its funny how people like that back down when someone stands up to them. I later told the frustrated girl that it was all right, every job takes awhile to learn and that it would seem to me, with Fryorlators going off and stuff, McDonald's would be a VERY stressful place to work!
Butcher your statement about not enough people calling their elected officials is a really good one. In a former life I was a Mayor of a small town. I can count on two hands how many people we showed up at our council meetings in 8 years. Pretty sad actually.
Maybe if we get kiosks and a machine that assembles and delivers my # 1 with fries and a coke ... I can actually get warm fries and the correct order... The Burger whopper I passed the other day is having a "job fair" next week, advertised on their sign. How bad is it when they have to beg people to come and apply?!? these jobs were never intended to be life long careers, most start there and move up or on... but some are ok with staying and demanding more for less...
Valid point I guess, but I was welding a bridge together down to Portsmouth, NH around the year 2000 and the McDonald's across the road was putting lettering on their sign that said, "Starting Pay: $12.50 and Hour." As a certified welder making a bridge that would last some 60 years or more, I was getting paid $15. We all shook our head at that!
for counter help? maybe things are different in NH that would have to be shift manager pay in this area, but our cost of living here is much lower.
Not sure, this was in the year 2000. The only thing it said on the sign was "closers". I assumed counter help that closed up for the night??? BTW: Portsmouth NH in the summer is a very busy place with tourists so that could be why as well. Hampton Beach is not far away!
Well there, this has been an interesting debate. Can we discuss a life choice that is very important to us all? It may be something that some of you take for granted every day but to me and some others it is a serious concern. When makin a samich is it Kraft Miracle Whip or Hellman's mayonnaise as part of your condiments?
Brother, I don't know about you, but me and the Mrs pretty near ended a marriage made literally in heaven because she came home with some mayonnaise made from...wait for it...try not to gag as I type it out...OLIVE OIL! I am pretty lenient, I mean the woman has 84 pairs of shoes, but Olive Oil Mayonnaise. I told her, "If you put that in the grocery cart, you minds well not even come home." Yuck!
Ugggg...right there with you. I put an end to that too. But she still sneaks in "lite mayonaise" in the fridge. I threw out a nearly brand new jar a while back because I honestly thought it had gone bad. So yes Butcher ....mayonaise it is.
She later said, after I mentioned it, she realized it did taste odd. Some perfectly good marriages have been split over this issue!! Mayonaise, Salad Dressing; who would have thought. (Some of what I type is tongue in cheek mind you )
