Hey guys, I finished up chemotherapy in July and starting to feel pretty good so now it's time to get back to splitting that red oak from last spring!! I've got a DR 28 Ton splitter and it's got a sporadic idle and I was wondering if anyone knew what could be the cause? This is how it's always ran, even brand new. It's only 2 years old now but I never tried to figure out what's causing the idle issue. It doesn't affect the operation of the splitter but it's getting annoying and I want to try to figure it out. If you notice from the video I can get it to idle a little cleaner if I choke it a little. Does anyone have any insight of what could be causing this? I would greatly appreciate advice!! Thanks in advance and happy Fall to everyone, my favorite time of the year!

I've heard that behavior called 'hunting' ....

When my engines show signs of it, I add some Sea Foam to the fuel tank before topping it off. Then I run the engine through a full duty cycle; in this case I'd split a load of wood. Has always cleared this issue up for me after the carb is cleaned out.

I've also noticed that I have to do this 'treatment' less frequently when I'm using 90+ octane fuel.

Mine used to the same thing it's the governor, there is a small screw and there are stops that won't let you turn maybe it maybe 1/4 of a turn ether way try turning it when it's at an idle.

Mine does this occasionally too. Really annoying. Seafoam hasn't helped.

I agree, but sometimes turning up the governor masks the issue.
Sometime the main jet gets crumbed up, and can be cured by adding choke.

This is more common with EPA regulated carbs.

The carburetor on that one is very easy to take off and clean the main jet, 3 bolts hold it on. I've done it on all my engines.

Well I just took a look at it and pulled the carb away from the engine and the corner of the gasket was folded over so it was sucking in air. Nothing but quality from DR!! :picard:
I put it back on and cranked everything tight and it's much better now. The gasket is torn where the bolt goes through so I will order a gasket kit and I think it will be all set. This thing has been nothing but trouble since I bought it! It still leaks hydraulic fluid from a couple of fittings, I'll get that straightened out this year too. Thanks for the help guys!

That's a cheap fix. Any small engine place will have that gasket. Glad you found the problem!
