These grow around here and I've often wondered what they were but just never taken the time to try looking it up. Perhaps someone could help ID this bush?
Wow. That surely doesn't look like any milkweed I've seen. The bush above is much taller than milkweed and the seed is much different but perhaps you have another version of the weed out there? Here is what I think of when thinking of milkweed.
Humm..... Now I'm confused. Eric VW and My IS heats my home how tall does your milkweed grow out there?
I just did some searching and most call it pokeweed rather than pokeberry but same thing. So now I know what it is and won't be eating the berry for sure!
Pokeweed is new to me. I do enjoy the "What is this question" Is pokeweed poisonous to touch Green berries seem to be more poisonous than mature, red berries. Pokeweed can cause nausea, vomiting, cramping, stomach pain, diarrhea, low blood pressure, difficulty controlling urination (incontinence), thirst, and other serious side effects. Don’t touch pokeweed with your bare hands. Reference: www.webmd.com/vitamins-supplements/ingredientmono-220-… Here is another take on the plant. This one says it is eaten. Pokeweed (Pokeberry)
Around here it's just called poke. It's the only green I'll eat. When boiled, you have to change the water once or it will poison you. I've often wondered, who got poisoned, about died, then decided to try it again with a water change.
FYI...it's also bought commercially around here by Allens Canning Co. But not grown commercially. They set a truck up in small towns and buy it by the pound in the spring.
Poke weed also know as poor mans asparagus, Roots are the most toxic. Young tender shoots and leaves 4-8" tall are delicious!!! One of my favorite early spring meals. If you collect the wrong parts or prepare it incorrectly it can/will cause kidney failure! Pokeweed: Prime Potherb
It's like blowfish or fugu in Japan. If prepared wrong, you die. No thanks. I've got enough safe, tasty food to eat.
