Took a short drive to Lancaster late morning to pickup the "shared use" Ride the wilds trails system. Riding on the roads with regular traffic was different for us, but at the same time pretty cool. When we finally made it to the trailhead we rode around for quite a while. We totaled 36 miles learning the area, (There is over 1000 miles within the entire trail system) and the trails were well marked. I didn't get too many pics because Dawn kept going and going and going....... barely a chance to grab the camera, lol.......

Ah, giving the legs a rest I see. It should be excellent in a few weeks with the turning leaves and crisp air.

We almost rented an ATV out of Gorham two weeks back, but plans changed. The trails were in the Jericho Mountain State Park area.

We're in another dry stretch, I saw a well drilling rig just north of here on an old farm house.

Are many of the wells there dug and shallow?

Yes there are dug wells on some of the older homes, some are 35 - 40 feet.

Would these trails be used by skidoos in the winter time? Nice pics. Looks a bit like our side of the country.

Yes, the snowmobilers have these and even more trails. As of 2 years ago, the snowmobiling industry yeilded about 400 million and the atv industry was at about 80 million. Now that these trails are in place, this income is expected to surpass the snowmobile industry. A registrstion fee of $ 55 per machine helps maintain the trail system as well as continuing the expansion of trails. A few dozen towns are involved with allowing registered atvs on the roads. One can ride and park at motels, restaurants, and gas stations. This is bringing revenue on a local level. The rules have stiff fines, stay on trail, if one is found in any wetland...... fines up to $ 10,000 dollars!

Can you use any of the atv trails to get you closer to some of the peaks way in the back country so you don't have such a long approach hike? Kinda cheating, I know...but.

I don't know for sure, maybe a few. I know that the areas to hike, especially the national forest heading to the peaks SHOULD be protected from atv'ers. We respect the land, but unfortunately many visitors do not.

We use logging roads - active or non-active to access hiking areas that years ago would have been overnight hikes or longer. We don't have ATVs but have a Tacoma that gets into the roughest places. In our area, the logging roads provide ATVs with access to a lot of areas but no formal riding trails as it is all leased tree farm licence.
