Just got an email notice; Harbor Freight has their 5 ton electric splitter on offer. $219.99 It looks very much like the one I have and mine is not too shabby for such a small unit. The coupon code is 11153676

One drawback to mine is that if you get a piece that it hard to split and it activates the over pressure relief valve, you have to turn the unit off to reset it.

I have an earlier version, save your cash, unless ya need to split kindling. A maul is much faster.

That may be true if you are strong and have a strong back. It may be true for you but not for me. I tried splitting with a maul and axe and got nowhere fast. Plus, unless you cut it very short, splitting sweetgum by a maul is going to be a lot of work. Yes, my little splitter is slow but it is a 100 times faster than what I can do by maul and axe. I just don't have the strength myself.

Heading out now to use my little splitter; seriously, I would be in a bad position without it. I tried splitting by hand and it was hard on me. I couldn't afford the little splitter but I consider it money well spent. I would like a better splitter and maybe one day I will come across a good deal on a used one. I do have to get down on my knees to use it :)

I used to split a lot by hand when I was younger. Heck, I even hand chopped all the wood for my grandmother for 3 years and it was mainly dead locust trees! It was her Christmas gift and she used to call it her beaver wood. I'm enough of a "wimp" now that I use a splitter too. Dad started with a homemade cone, to homemade hydraulics and then I built my own hydraulic. We all start somewhere. I use the money saved from wood heat to "upgrade" the ease of doing it. Whether it be a better saw, heating system, splitter, etc.

Hmm, this I wonder. I have a similar splitter, and ran it against a young, strong, and experienced guy swinging an x27, and his brother with a maul. I was easily more productive with the electric, on "moderate difficulty" rounds.

That said, I split a lot by hand. And I believe I am faster with the x27 than the electric for easier rounds.

YMMV, and we are of course talking about two different splitters.

One I don't cut sweetgum, and even if I had a splitter I guess I only would if I had too as there was nothing else.

We actually I do cut some if it's in the way , a trash tree I am removing , or I damaged it dropping another tree. But I try to keep it smaller than like 5 or 6"s in diameter so I don't have to split it.

Why, I burned it last year and thought it did very well as firewood.

Cause it takes me just as long to cut sweetgum as it does oak or hickory and longer to split if it needed it for way less BTU output.

Kind of the same reason I don't cut too much pine or go out of my way to cut it. Half the heat for just as much work. Only benefit is that it's dry in a short time here.

Is the term "on offer" used here in place of "on sale" ? I have never heard that used before?

Yes, means the same. You have to use the coupon code to get it for that price and can be used in both online and in the shop.

I don't buy anything from HF unless I'm OK with throwing it away after the first or second time I use it. Junk, junk and more junk. Don't waste your money

HF does not make tools; some things may be cheaper quality, that is true. As you can see, this is a SpeeCo splitter. No, it is not a 20 ton splitter so it won't do what a 20 ton splitter will do. Respect the tool is my adage. I have had mine for two seasons now and it has saved me a lot of work.

I have bought junk from HF.

I have also bought tools that I can (and do) rely on. Do your homework, and there are some good deals on decent tools there.

On HF tools, read the reviews, it is important because you will find out before you buy. I started to buy a cheap palm sander on HF but the reviews let me know that I would be wasting my money. Another item I did buy was the trailer hitch adapter for my car which came with a 1 inch hitch. Since I brought the steel carrier for the front of the tractor it made since to have the adapter so I could use the carrier on the car. I paid $15.95 plus $6.95 shipping and got the free cheap digital meter as well. That adapter is solid and would cost twice or more somewhere else.
