Some box elder has a lot of red and some has none. I have not been able to determine why that is.

We need to rename it "bacon elder".

Look at where I live and the range map:eek::zip::picard::(. It happens to grow around here. But when it occurs we don't really pay attention to it. Kind of a in the trash tree group. In the moutains I think there is more of it??

Also I should know it!!!!! Learned it green and white ash in school, Latin names too!

It's a trash tree around here too, for the most part. I take as much as I can though. As long as it's easy to get.

I would too, for firewood. But when we're logging it's just hardwood pulpwood. Which basically covers 95% of the hardwood we cut. We cut very little logs. So it really doesn't matter if it's boxelder, sweetgum, poplar, hickory or ash. It's hardwood and that's all that matters.

I bet 9 out of 10 or probably closer to 10 out of 10 loader men/loggers don't even know what box elder is:picard:

Like I know if it turns out not to be Box elder I got it wrong...but I'm talking they don't even know that's a tree period.

Wow, that's cool looking. Can you "capture" the red in a slice if you quickly encapsulate it in resin or something?? Would make a killer clock, coaster, end table....

Idk. I never tried but I cut some cookies for decorations in the fall and they were brown in a few hours. They are still neat because the layers stay. Next time I run into some I'll throw some waterlox or something on them right away

If you put water or poly on the brown does it not turn back reddish?

Finally got it split and here are a few more pics. Pretty generic-looking wood inside (not much character at all). A few of the rounds have the pinhole someone mentioned earlier in the thread. Tree was healthy when it was cut down. Any help?

A bit of cherry in that last pic.
