YIKES!! Can't even image it (says the avid Steeler fan!). Ever seen the movie "Buffalo 66"? Crazy movie.... Nah, you will be perfectly fine. I leave the bulk of my wood un-covered, it gets rained on, snowed on, high humidity... In the fall when the weather gets cold and dry, it dries out just like the covered stuff... I find it doesn't matter. If you need to season it fast, that's another story. But if it will sit a 2 or 3 years, makes no difference. 3 years ago I picked up about 2 cord of wood from a neighbors house, he was retired and moving and offered the wood to me prior to leaving (he went to Floriduh, didn't need to take it! ). The stacks were there "for 10 or 15 years" he told me. Stacked on the ground, between some tree's, no covers. It was the driest wood I have ever seen, and I would say about 5% of it was "punky". And most of that 5% was the stuff that was sitting on the bottom layer on the ground. duck was awesome. How is it possible you live near the Burgh, have a close relative on the staff of the Steelers, and you are NOT bleeding Black and Gold???? What??? That is unconscionable!! If the Steelers could simply put the bongs down for 10 minutes and actually have some of the starters actually play a football game, we can easily take the SB this year. Bryant, Bell..... every year we loose 2 or 3 big guys to the bong. When are these jackasses going to learn?? And, he's a secret under cover agent for the FBI!!
Usually an uncovered stack, subject to lots of sun and wind, gets a chance to dry out between soakings. Take away the sun and wind, add in lots of rain and humidity, add some leaves and pine needles to further hold in moisture and you can end up with slow seasoning and some rotten, weathered wood. It doesn't help when you start off with a per centage of punky and/or soft wood either. Your tops are protecting the core and high percentage so it should be perfect. or perfect enough
