Saw bogging down

I was using my 290 yesterday and it started and ran fine at first. It would bog down about half way thru the cut. It revved fine if I pulled it out of the log but would bog down once I started cutting again. Any suggestions?

 

Check the airfilter, fuel filter or the fuel cap vent first.

 

The saw work fine when is out of the wood , and when you start cutting bogging -down ??

 

Yes. The saw starts and revs fine.

 

I did a muffler mod last winter and tuned the carb. It ran great after that. I tried to use the saw again this summer and it's like a whole new saw in a bad way

 

Do you use ethanol gas? If so you should drain it at the end of the season and dispose of any remaining fuel. Old ethanol gas can do real bad things.

 

I do use ethanol gas and have for 5 years. I guess that may have caught up to my saw

 

Probably getting the wrong mix (too rich) in the warm weather. Gotta think of it like a snowmobile...... They rip like mad at any temp below ~20°, scream like no other at 0°. Anything over 30°, especially above freezing with humidity from snow melt, they really start running rich and lose power. I'm thinking thats the case with the saw too.

 

Small engine repair is not my strong suit. I can swap parts out but next to zero troubleshooting ability

 

I doubt it.
The only thing that went wrong with my 290 was the carb over some 15 years had accumulated dirt and debris to where it wouldn't"tune".
Replacement carb on Amazon for 28 bucks fixed it.

 

I think that you have already check the filters , lines , clutches etc , etc if all theese are good
then dismantling the carburator include the H and L screw
then put the carb in accetone for about 10 -15 minutes take off the carb from the accetone and spray a carb cleaner from the H and the L screw holes and see carefully if the carb cleaner come out from the small holes ( jets ) that the carb have in the metering side ( where the needle is ) and from the throtle flywheel if all is ok then asemley the carb put it on the saw and tell us if its better

your problem is a little mysterius because the saw run good out of the woods and bogging when you start cutting

 

Here we have a saw that iddling and run good out of the wood and when it touch the wood start bogging and make problems

i agree to change the carb if it make the same problems in and out of the woods

but here we dont have see yet if is the carb or something else

 

I thought this as soon as I read it and then when I saw he tuned it in the winter I am more wondering if this is the case?

 

Bogging in the middle of the cut like he says is more mysterious to me?

 

I haven't had a chance to try to tune the saw yet. I did get a new fuel and filter and spark plug. The air filter was really dirty and the spark plug was very black. Hope to get to play with it some next Saturday

 

Plug was probably so dirty from running rich from air restriction.

Could also have a coil problem? Cool spark?
