Sure it will cut but you're talking 1/4" thick sheet here. Really thick stuff. Thicker than anything else on that stove. Did you consider a thinner plate?

My only failure cutting with a jigsaw is cutting, no, trying to cut hardiboard tile backer. It rubbed the teeth right off of the metal cutting jigsaw blade after about 12 inches.

I wasn't sure what thickness to get that wouldn't sag after cutting out for the pipe.
I guess I'll be investing in some new blades.

The problem is that the hardi is mineral board.... the stone dulls the blade, going slow with cutting oil should be ok. I do agree though that 1/4" is a bit overkill.

    Mine is about .031".

    .250" is way overkill.

    No spare car hoods here.
Also, no good places that I know of to get sheet metal. We live in the sticks.

I'm sure it is overkill but you got what you got, just go slow cutting it. Make sure you have a good grinding wheel ready
It'll be all gooder when you're done:).

I wonder if it will get hot enough to still cook on it? You know, brewed coffee, chili, stew, etc.

Pretty sure I have a grinder, so I may just use that.
    I'll need some wheels.
I found a few metal cutting jig blades in the shop, but I have the funniest of feelings that they aren't much of a match for this stuff.
I imagine the deck will absorb lots of heat if I leave the blower off while cooking. Experiments to ensue.
And VERY boring. Except for the language. :D

You'd be surprised how fast that jigsaw will cut through that with a good blade though, with a fence on the stock , should make a nice straight cut.
Try what ya got, Make some practice test cuts on what's going to be your scrap stock with the different tools, better to do test Cuts if you can then screw up the final piece
