I had been thinking of doing this for awhile and so I bought an inexpensive HF 5000 pound winch and welded up a mount so that I could strap it to a tree. I took it up to the mountains to try out on leaners going the wrong way and for skidding. I have to say it sure saved my back some and made things a lot easier for getting wood out to my truck. Some pics.

I'm thinking of doing the same thing in my splitting area to lift up the big boys

Probably a permit allowing him to cut and take the wood. Someone with a screen larger than this iPhone can confirm.

That is my wood cutting permit since I was in National Forest. I felled 5 trees that day and getting them out to the truck the winch worked great.

Now if you just had a bow saw to save your back...

It has not been run since the last time you used it.

That looks real slick Mag Craft, I could really use a set up like that. I see the tell tale signs of beetle kill. How long you figure that one has been dead? Is it getting harder to find or is the little bugger still killing trees out your way?

Do you think a large HD come along would be better? I am just thinking of the volume of equipment you are carrying. Great idea, not knocking your idea at all, just curious

The reduction on a come a long would have you cranking all day long.

Great idea! That'd work great to get an elk or a moose out of the woods too.

I have not seen a lot of new beetle kill here. The half way decent size dead trees are just further in from the road and limbing them and getting them out to the truck is where the real work is.

I was thinking of the time factor when I made this. With a coupon I am into the winch for a 170 dollars and using a old wagon it is easy to get it out there anywhere I want.
The winch does skid out the wood faster then a come along.

This really not a new idea but just a different twist using a inexpensive harbor freight winch. I would bet that even a smaller winch would work fine also. Like in the 3000 to 3500 pound range instead of the 5000 pound winch I bought.

A rope puller is much better than a come along but still not as fast as a winch
