Someone asked the other day, 'What was your favourite 'fast food' when you were growing up?'
'We didn't have fast food when I was growing up,' I informed him.
    'All the food was slow.'
‘C'mon, seriously ... Where did you eat?'
'It was a place called 'home,'' I explained.
'Mum cooked every day and when she got home from work, we sat down together at the dining room table,
And if I didn't like what she put on my plate, I was allowed to sit there until I did like it.'

By this time, the lad was laughing so hard I was afraid he was going to suffer serious internal damage, so I didn't tell him the part about how I had to have permission to leave the table.

But here are some other things I would have told him about my childhood if I'd figured his system could have handled it:

Some parents NEVER owned their own house, wore jeans, set foot on a golf course, travelled out of the country or had a credit card.

My parents never drove me to school ... I had a bicycle that weighed probably 50 pounds, and only had one speed (slow). Before I had a bike I walked.

We didn't have a television in our house until I was 7.
It was, of course, black and white, and the station went off the air at 10 PM, after playing the national anthem and epilogue; it came back on the air at about 12 noon.
Pizzas were not delivered to our home ... But milk was.

All newspapers were delivered by boys and all boys delivered newspapers — I delivered a newspaper, seven days a week. I had to get up at 5.30 every morning except Sunday when I had a lie-in until 6.30.

Film stars kissed with their mouths shut. At least, they did in the films. There were no movie ratings because all movies were responsibly produced for everyone to enjoy viewing, without profanity or violence or almost anything offensive.

If you grew up in a generation before there was fast food, you may want to share some of these memories with your children or grandchildren. Just don't blame me if they bust a gut laughing.

Growing up isn't what it used to be, is it?

    MEMORIES from a friend:
My Dad is cleaning out my grandmother's house (she died recently) and he brought me an old lemonade bottle.
In the bottle top was a stopper with a bunch of holes in it. I knew immediately what it was, but my daughter had no idea.
She thought they had tried to make it a salt shaker or something. I knew it as the bottle that sat on the end of the ironing board to 'sprinkle' clothes with because we didn't have steam irons. Man, I am old

    How many do you remember?
Headlight dip-switches on the floor of the car.
    Ignition switches on the dashboard.
Trouser leg clips for bicycles without chain guards.
Soldering irons you heated on a gas burner
Using hand signals for cars without turn indicators.

    Older Than Dirt Quiz:
Count all the ones that you remember, not the ones you were told about. Ratings at the bottom .

    01 Sweet cigarettes
02 Coffee shops with juke boxes
03 Home milk delivery in glass bottles
04 Party lines on the telephone
    05 Newsreels before the movie
06 TV test cards that came on at night after the last show and were there until TV shows started again in the morning.
(There were only 2 channels [if you were fortunate] )
    07 Peashooters
    08 33 rpm records
    09 45 rpm records
    10 Hi-fi ’ s
11 Metal ice tray s with levers
    12 Blue flashbulb
    13 Cork popguns
    14 Wash tub wringers

If you remembered 0-3 = You're still young
If you remembered 3-6 = You are getting older
If you remembered 7-10 = Don't tell your age
If you remembered 11-14 = You're positively ancient!

I must be 'positively ancient' but those memories are some of the best parts of my life.

Don't forget to pass this along!
Especially to all your really OLD friends .... I just did!

I remember almost all of them. I remember one meal specifically when Mom made liver and I had to sit there until I ate it......that time never came so finally Dad said okay you can get up.....couldn't wait till breakfast as I was allowed to get up but that didn't mean I got something else.

    01 Sweet cigarettes Yes
02 Coffee shops with juke boxes More like a drug store with a counter you sat at.
03 Home milk delivery in glass bottles With the insulated milk box on the front porch
04 Party lines on the telephone We had a 2 party line but my Uncle had 4 on his line. You had to know the ring type for your phone.
05 Newsreels before the movie Yes
06 TV test cards that came on at night after the last show and were there until TV shows started again in the morning.
(There were only 2 channels [if you were fortunate] ) Yes and No. We were a test market for cable. It was available in our area in 1958. Our 13 channels went off the air around 1-2am. But they were from NY and Philly.
    07 Peashooters Indeed
    08 33 rpm records Yes
    09 45 rpm records Yes
    10 Hi-fi ’s Yes
11 Metal ice tray s with levers. Still have a few of them floating around somewhere
12 Blue flashbulb Yep. And it was almost magical when they came out with the 4 sided bulbs
    13 Cork popguns Yes
14 Wash tub wringers We never had one but the grandparents did[/QUOTE]

Guess that puts me in the ancient category. Still trying to figure out when that happened. [IMG]

My father WAS the milkman. I remember riding with him in the summer to my friends houses. His old milk truck is in a transportation museum here. If I can I will post a picture.

I grew up in an old fashioned atmosphere. All of those things were commonplace.

I also remember going out to the woodpile when we were kids and stealing eggs out of the ducks nests for breakfast when we'd sleep over at grammas......those eggs mixed with fried potatoes cooked on an old cast iron skillet......great memories! Every time I cook eggs and taters it reminds me of my gramma.....

I can remember Mom used a cloths line in the back yard to dry out all of our cloths. We did not get a electric cloths dryer until I was in junior high school.

I doubt if todays kids would even know what a cloths line would look like.

First record player we had was 78's. we cranked it up. then came 45's then 33's I think I was 7 or 8 when TV came. two very snowy stations. Pinky Lee, and Howdy Dodi. I remember getting on the train alone and heading up north to visit my grandparents when I was ten. That was with long stop and change over. After that, I had to work or no new clothes. Didn't mind it. It is just the way things were. Didn't have to mow the grass because we didn't have a lawn until I was about 11 or 12. I had a lot of fun back then, even though I did get the occasional whipping with a stick or strap. I skipped that part with my kids. They all have done well.
