Was at Vinton Forest today for a workshop on trails and road construction and maintenance. They have clear-cut a few areas and replanted them with disease resistant Chestnut trees from Purdue! The cabin where we held the indoor portion of the seminar was made of chestnut logs by the CCC in 1936. I thought that this was great news and will be interested in some saplings. They have planted approximately 5 thousand so far. I thought this was great news!
I actually have a chestnut tree on my fence line. I'll try to get a pic if I can remember. It's relatively young.

Penn State University, along with the American Chestnut Foundation (think that's what it's called) has been working on a disease-resistant strain for around 20 years and I believe they have it nailed down now, there's some big groves of juvenile trees flourishing not far from my home here. And they've been hit with the blight and so far haven't been affected ....it's great news! I sure hope they can get the EAB and the Asian Longhorn Beetle figured out soon before other trees become extinct......
