Over the winter my Stihl 064 crapped the plug.....literally.....as some of you may remember when I originally posted about it. Had a local shop install a helicoil in it and he did a lousy job installing it. So I ended up with a trashed cylinder. Took it to my buddy out the street who happens to build some of the most amazing custom car grilles on the planet (check out www.alumicraft.com), he took some time from his busy day and welded the spark plug hole shut for me so I could re-tap it. And he did a great job, finally got around to drilling and tapping the hole and it worked perfectly. Pic of the hole welded shut..... Pic of the saw back together and ready for war!!! Gonna slap a 28" B/C on her this weekend for a big walnut tree we have to take down. To be honest, I'm starting to wonder if that plug has been loose for a while, because it seems to have a bit more grunt and throttle response than it did before the repair.....

Next time anyone is in that position, look up " time-sert". They even have a big version to fix failed helicoil repairs. ++ TIME-SERT Official Threaded inserts for stripped threads, blown out sparkplugs, They are not cheap, but can be done at home zero or even away. Nice work your buddy did though
Total cost of this repair......zero dollars. My buddy wouldn't take any money for the weld job. And another buddy loaned me the proper tap.
It was TIG'd. And he didn't use a backer. He filled that hole almost perfectly, the whole way through, with no backer whatsoever. He's a very talented welder. Check out see of the custom grilles he builds on the link I posted to his shop. He makes jigs and crafts those grilles 100% on site with materials he makes on his CNC and also freehand.
That is impressive. Even if our guys are welding up tight corners in transformer enclosures, they put a piece of copper buss on the inside of a corner..... No backer + TIG= WOW
With aluminum, not sure what you could use as a backer......I use copper on steel and sheet metal all the time, it works well.

Copper would work as long as it's a hefty chunk. Glad to see you got the saw back together! Some serious firepower right there....
Maybe he needs and old chevy load of split locust or white oak to show up at his house split and stacked one day ;-) wood will be too much work to return. Or a quart of that maple syrup to be dropped off one afternoon at the shop after work And if he says something about syrup tell him food items are non returnable . Good work. Glad to see a worker back togeather.
I give him bottles of our homemade syrup quite often.......that's most likely why he did it for free......lol. he loves the stuff!
