You will really notice a difference with the MM!! If you think you can tell now! Wait till you drill a 1/2 hole in that muffler and pull the baffle and back out the H screw 1/4 turn or so

Once I get this bigger workhorse I will be more comfortable with modifying the Craftsman. With my level of experience, I am a little wary of the mod.

I will do my best to barter, but that is completely against my nature.

I don't know if they let you start them up or whatever but you can tell a little bit about the compression by pulling on the rope

Check out the bar and take a close look, you can kind of tell how much the saw has been used.

I would think if it had been straight gassed it would not run very well if at all, I don't think it takes very long at all, for a saw to die that has been straight gassed

You should start a new thread (what to look for buying a used saw) probably get more input.
I don't think they're going to let you take the muffler off but I guess you never know

I'd start it and find something substantial to cut. Head over to the lumber section and maybe trim a few racks of 2x's to length for 'em.! :saw::saw::saw:

Seriously tho, start and rev 'er up a couple times. If all seems well there, I'd say it's worth three hundred or so. New, the equivalent saw sells for about $600.

When I bought mine I had 2 to choose from and I thought I was lucky. 8 choices is crazy, might be to many. I started both of them pizz revved them a few times and listened to them idle for a couple minutes. Took the b&c off looked at the clutch, sprocket and how much oil was on bar and oozing from the oiler. Checked out the case for cracks and paint chips. Never pulled the muffler they both felt stout.
The rental manager was there so he told me the history. They were both 18 months old. The date is on the handle. Rented 7 and 9 times. He said they usually sell them after 2 years but they stocked up after hurricane Katrina and Irene and there was no demand for them now. He also said they list what they pay for them which was $559.
Ultimately I went with the one that felt stronger and sounded a little richer and I have been happy. I paid $275 for mine.
A few things you should know, the H screw hole will be epoxied and the chain is garbage.
Hope this helps. You will not be disappointed and have a big smile on your face for the first week or so!!!:saw::saw::saw:

I forgot to add that they filled fluids and threw in 2 bottles of 2.6oz Makita oil, tuning screwdriver, a scrench and the owners manual. So you should receive those as well!

Rpm would depend on the year. The older ones were higher rpm limit than the newer versions.

Not true buddy. Your thinking of the 7900. All 6400s are 13.5k rev limited. Red coils! :).

OP if you plan on leaving these saws as is and just running them you will like the 6100 much better. IMO. Lol. But the 6400 is an amazingly good saw with huge potential!

Good info. I thought no matter the saw 6400-7900/7910 that it was year based.

So what are the better year coils for the 7900? And are any over 13,500? Or is the 6400 coil the one to have for a 7900? My mind is wandering all over now :)

So, here is another question. It is a "20 inch" bar saw. Can I put my good 18" bar and chain on it until I get a better 20" chain, supposing that the stock 20" bar is in good condition?
