It's about 40 yards from the trail on a side hill, it will be easy to roll down the rounds so I can split it. I had planned on clearing out a trail at the base of that hill, guess I'll have to do it.
If the Cherry did not have that rot up the center of the log we could get some nice money out of some trees. If you remember where the trail is that goes by the swamp, this Cherry is off to the right of that on the hill when were going in.
Just north of this we have so much Cherry down from the wind events from last year, I'm hoping to mill a few logs. The new stacking area I'll have ready should hold 4-6 cord, I'll have that full by July depending on the weather. The Beech,Sugar Maple, Ironwood and the Yellow Birch get cut first, all are damaged from the ice storm or wind events, then the Cherry.
Depending on the wind tomorrow, my plans would be to take care of these damaged trees. Pic 8503 are some Cherry tops, 8505 is a Maple damaged by the ice storm, pic 8506 & 07 is the same Cherry damaged by the ice storm.
It's pretty good size, we have some good sized Cherry that are down just north of this, once spring rolls around we'll get some pics.
Hey Zap, how big is that Cherry? DBH? I have my eye on one that I will sink every inch of a 28" bar into. It's tall and straight too. No way am I going to use the first 30-40 ft of it for firewood either.
I know of another one that's bigger. Not mine tho. Once they get big, they tend to rot up the center, like Zap pointed out. Usually a ton of carpenter ants in them too.
The ones I find aren't rotted but they literally disintegrate when the wedge hits them into 5 or 6 smaller pieces.
Thats a darn nice tree there ! Have some good size cherry up here in my neck of the woods . Most times if they get "too" big...the woodpeckers already have a job to do
They can be twisted pretty good, rarely are they super straight. The bark is very messy too, always chunks of it flaking off every time you even think about picking a piece up. I clear a spot and save the splitter trash whenever I process Cherry. My BIL and FIL like it for the smoker.
I'm not sure, but there's another one down just north of this that I think is bigger, no pictures yet. Then not far from these two we have some that are bigger than these two, all were taken down by the wind events we had last spring & summer. We usually have just over three cord of Cherry ready for burning each year, this guess might be off but I think we have an easy 7-9 cord of Cherry down. My plan for this winter if I continue to cut is grab what's close to the trails, once I can hit the hills in the spring I'm going after the downed Beech, Sugar Maple,Ironwood and the Yellow Birch. My goal for 2014, cut 6-8 cord.
That's a big one for sure!! Up by our Cabin in Pa, there is some Cherry trees that are Huge! Have to go back through my Gallery in the PC and gather some pics. Never seen them so large. Some big ones here in Ohio, but further east they are much larger. And the Hemlocks are huge near the cabin as well (Forrest Co PA).
If I remember right, after the second Cherry which is about 50-60 yards from the one pictured, we have a downed or broken off Beech, it's time I do some checking.
