I was a climber when I was a child. Put something way up on the top shelf with a ladder in the kitchen (9 foot ceilings) and if I knew it was up there, when everyone's back was turned up I'd go. Put something on top of the refrigerator that I wanted, no problem.

So for me, one of those child safety gates would have meant something more to climb. (I learned to climb before I could walk  )

cabinet drawers make an excellent ladder also. Just pull the bottom drawer to full open, the middle drawer about half open, and the top drawer just a little open! And there you are...walking on top of the counter and reaching the one with the meds in it!

Yup, Mom had her handsfull with me that day. Called the Doc and asked how to get meds out of me.....
I think she used the raw egg trick.

Star Gazer, why does that not surprise me about you? Oh yeah, your posts of climbing your way up those Spruce trees out front on the road. You were destined to climb.

Our little one just started pulling herself up to stand, it won't be long until NOTHING is safe in our house! She loves cords for some reason (power cords, charging cords, speaker wires) and will make a beeline across the room when she sees one.

This^ kind of experience teaches kids: to be careful, think before you act, consequences, bravery, self-reliance, eye hand coordination, determination, adapt, overcome, etc.
All Great things to know in life.
Toooo many safeties in American life now. Contaminates the gene pool and inhibits natural selection. And our tax dollars fund it :headbang:

Hell, we didn't even have car seats when we were kids. Not always a good thing, but that's how it was.

And how many remember being able to ride in the back of any pickup truck down the highway? We could see no harm and was not harmed either.

my little guy at 2 would climb any thing! I jump.... was one of his favorite games.. I always caught him..... i cannot count time I broke a rib diving over vacuum or whatever so as he didn't die... then a social worker told Me i had to put those stupid plugs in all outlets for safety... I went to bathroom to help his brother come out and he's pulling them out with a butter knife:bug::hair:.. Then he started learning what NO.. meant quick

And cabinet doors above the counter, especially the ones with double doors. Each shelf was another step, and the center piece was plenty to hold onto in order to make it to the top level where you could open the doors and find all those hidden treasures. Known or unknown!:bug:

you can't trust a toddler out of your sight. Not for a minute. Even drag them into the bathroom with you unless they were soundly sleeping. worse even when they have a sibling only a year apart. What one doesn't think of, the other one will. I can recall mine getting into trouble while I was on the phone.

Heck, that still happens where I live. Well, it only happens when the farmers can find kids that aren't afraid to sweat baling straw and hay, which is a real problem. I hear the pay is up to $12-15/hour cash and kids still won't work for it.

Our 2.5 yr old no longer has a book shelf in his room. A couple of nights ago he thought it'd be fun to jump off of it, onto his bed. At a little over a year he climbed over a baby gate (kind without vertical bars) and busted his lip.

The 8 month old is easily pulling himself up on things and the doctor says his upper body strength is crazy. Wanna bet he'll be a climber? Ugh...

Jumping can get spooky, sometimes on the couch its obvious she is not totally in control and can take a bounce in the wrong direction, oops. What scares me more is bookshelves tipping over, 1\2 our house is concrete block too hard to anchor to wall, we don't have bookshelves in there either:handshake:

Oh, baby gate oooops?!? I had an electric radiator (space heater) behind a baby gate, I thought was a good safe idea. Well, instead she threw her security blanket of the gate. Thank God we figured out what the funny burning smell was in time:hair:

That much? I used to bale for two dollars an hour. That was a tough job, hot, sweaty, & itchy.
