Took a walk through Dad's property and here are a few trees that need to be dealt with this year. Probably have about double this amount but if I can get these cut up this year I will be happy. Blow down that is still leaning Tree #2 Bunch of tops that are still good Tree #3 Clear on top of the hill with the top broke out Tree #4 Another blow down Tree #5 Another Blowdown Tree #6 Another Blowdown This one will be a pain to get to Tree #6 Top is broken out
Top that blew out Tree #7 Blew the top out Tree #8 Blow down that is slightly hung up. Hoping this one comes down by itself
Looks good. How much snow to deal with, or do you plan to wait until spring? Sis-in-law's looks similar....there's so much downed stuff, I'll be busy cutting just that for a long time. As I get that done, more comes down. twl knows about that.
Is that a 460 I hear idling in the background? Just rev the saw a couple times and see if a couple will lay down for ya. Seriously now, be very careful with those hang-ups. They are some of the most dangerous trees to play with in the woods.
Just about every tree in those pictures is either red or white oak. I also have a HUGE pine that I didn;t take pictures of that's down though and it will be one of the first to get dealt with since its across the begining of the trail. Yes and No......... The oil company deeded him the oil well a few years ago and as long as it's not to cold it will heat his house however in years like this the pressure will start to drop a bit and he has to watch his consumption. He has yet to fire the stove up in the past three years though so he is doing ok. I cut split and stack at his house and he helps quite a bit He takes what he needs which has been nothing lately other than some summer bonfires and I take what I need which has been nothing lately, lol. I have roughly 6 cords of wood at his house right now that is in the range of 2-5 years of CSS. I took two 6 foot bed loads of pine this fall for shoulder season but I haven't had to dip into what I call my reserve wood that's over there yet. Between his property and mine there is roughly 21 cords available.
A lot of that stuff is on some pretty steep hills so it's gonna have to be dry to get to it so it might be this summer. One way or another it's coming down.
We have some long steel cables and a Ford 861 Power Master that we hook to the trees and put tension on. I wont lay into them unless I know which way they are headed and even then I get nervous sometimes. That's my plan with the 460 I'm going to see if revving it up will scare them down and into rounds!
When we had the May wind event, it put down a big pine across the trail so I cut enough out of it so the rhino would fit through, I then went after the better wood that was down. I still have some chit in that area just off the trail that needs some attention.
