Bird Identification

When I was pushing in some wood I noticed this bird eating something (part of the tree) in the top of a Cherry.

It's the best I could do on the picture since I was a good distance away.

 

I cant tell for sure but my guess is a Red Bellied woodpecker.


Or a Northern Flicker.

 

My first thought was grouse

 

Thought grouse too, by the body
they branch tips, leaf buds.

Grouse here (spruce hen)
They eat spruce needles thru winter.
Taste like spruce needles in the winter too

 

Grouse, plump, stripes on the front. My old Tom cat was good at bringing them home. Gone now.

 

Yup, grouse. We see that here constantly

 

I was thinking yellow shafted flicker (same as pb's northern flicker), but it is hard to judge size in the picture.

 

I say Grouse also...Looks to big to be a woodpecker!

 

I think you guys are right. Maybe close on the colors but too big. I'm guess I'm not used to seeing grouse up in the tops of trees.
