Wood ID help

What kind of tree is this? Basswood is my guess but not sure. Upper mi tree

It looks basswoody, from that first pic.

 

It is about 28 dbh

 

It also looks to me like Basswood. It does have that red inside bark color you see in the hole.

 

Yep, basswood.

It is nice burning wood, but only 14 mbtu's per cord, so low on the btu scale.

But, that's a lot of wood, even if it's only really good for shoulder season stuff.


Here's the one I have cut into rounds.

Mother nature brought it down, so I might as well take it and turn it into firewood.

 

Mine is not down yet. But as you see is on its way on its own. Has heavy face lean. Barber chair prone? How do you id basswood

 

Light weight wood, white Heartwood, that reddish inner bark.

They usually grow in groups, although the one I have cut up was a loner.

The trunk broken off in your pic is another reason I say basswood. It's not very strong.


The leaves are a dead giveaway, but the bark looks like many more desirable firewood.


I think they are less prone to barberchair than many species, and simply will snap off.

 

I've got a few, hey it's wood. It all adds up towards the three year plan.

 

There's a good chance that thing is hollow. I cut one down that looked like that, It had 6 squirrels living in it. I made a planter out of it.
